I'm a veteran fantasy player, but I've never done a PPR league until this season. I recently found out that I have the last pick in our 12 team league. I'm thinking if I can get 2 out of Fitz, Andre, Moss, and Calvin w/ my first two picks, then that's what I'll do. If only one of those remain I'd take them and a RB. Just wondering if you guys could give any advice for an overall draft strategy, not just 1st couple of picks, for somebody picking in my spot for PPR.
"Here's the thing: if you can't spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table, you are the sucker."- Rounders
This year I have Moss, FItz and AJ (in that order) well ahead of the next tier. I would not ahve an issue with drafting 2 of them on the turn and then filling out RB's at the 3/4 turn. I personally would exclude Calvin and likely take a RB instead of him. He has the chance to be the best in the NFL, I think Detroit did nothign to improve teh O-Line and may start a rookie QB. His numbers may dip slightly this year.
Really tough call here. I would no doubt take 1 of Moss, Fitz, AJ but are you confident in solid RB's coming back to you in 3/4. In our league the RB's fly off the list (not ppr). But in PPR two of those WR"s would be HUGE!!!!!!!
I would crunch the 13th drafted player "WR vs your 3rd round RB Then look at the 13th player drafted RB vs the 3rd round WR" See how that looks. I bet in PPR the WR WR RB would out score the WR RB WR.
RB production tends to nose-drive after the first ~10 are off the board, as you're basically out of feature backs at that point and youre looking at injury risks and time shares. i tend to believe that if you can't get a true stud RB in PPR, you're better off going WR-WR, and then filling out your RBs with lots of high-risk, high-upside guys. you may even want to grab another WR at the 3-4 turn if someone like greg jennings or boldin is available. you can get lots of value guys like ray rice and larry johnson in later rounds, stockpile a bunch, and play the matchups.
In ppr leagues the tier 1 rb group widends dramatically.... in ppr slaton finished the year 8 pts behind turner and 5 pts behind peterson...so if you could snag a rb of that increased caliber (due to ppr) at 12 and one of the top 3 wr...you are sitting in pretty good shape compared to your draft position.
So my advice would be to take a look at the numbers and find a rb who catches the football that you like and snag him with a wr... just my 2 cents.
I'm in the same boat....12 team, ppr, redraft. We have options to say the least. If 11 rb's go first, then I'll be going Fitz/AJ. Hopefully that will start a continued wr run that may stretch the rb's alittle further. If Deangelo, Gore or Slaton fall, I'm taking 2 of them. If only one make it, then I'll go rb/wr. I think they still offer unmatched value compared to what you may get in the 3rd/4th. Pierre or Grant may not be there @ 36,37, but solid wr's will be. I do know that we can't afford to take Brees or Brady @ 12/13. We just have to be prepared and see how that 1st round shakes out. I'm mocking with all 3 scenarios....hope this helps.
I have no problem going WR/WR with the 12th pick in the first round. I would go with either AJ/ Fitz or Moss/AJ to start with. Normally once the first WR is taken a huge run starts. Plus, you are almost guaranteed that a few QB's will be taken in the first and second round. There should still be some quality RB's in the late third early 4th (Bush, P. Thomas, Lynch, Ronnie Brown, McFadden).
What group do you think looks better? (ppr league):
Team A: Andre Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald, R. Bush, M. Lynch
Team B (assuming you go RB/RB with your first 2 picks): B. jacobs, Portis, Housh, Ocho Cinco

With your assumptions team B wouldn't look like that... it would be more like S. Slaton and D. Williams would be pick 12/13 (according to cafe ppr rankings)....and possibly could get a lil better wr pairing.

Highly unlikely you'll see 11 RB's fly off the board in that scenario leaving you with Fitz/AJ - ain't gonna happen, especially in a PPR!
