Mattb47's Draft/Trade Q&A - Ask Away!

Postby mattb47 » Mon Jul 27, 2009 10:56 pm

I've run threads like this before, mostly in the start/bench forum but the intent is still the same. I figure if I can offer people at least 1 well thought out opinion on their question then it's worth doing. That's what I'm looking for...if you want an opinion on a question that pertains to what this thread is about (Who to draft, Trade advice, etc), then feel free to post your question and I'll answer it and give reasons why I think what I think whenever I'm able to.

I'll try to keep up as much as I can, so try to be patient as I will work to get to everyone if you post it here. Ask away!

I am in a 12 team keeper league. PPR. I can keep up to 5 players, but have have to keep ATLEAST 3, but only 2 per position. New to the league, so not sure if there is compensation for keeping less than 5 or not, but I'm thinking there is, so let's go with that. The draft is in September. So I have time, I'm jus starting early.

Ok, here's the deal. I know about what to do, jus wanted some outside advice. Here is my roster.

QB - Matt Schaub, Jeff Garcia, Marc Bulger.
RB - Thomas Jones, Clinton Portis, Michael Turner, Chester Taylor.
WR - Roddy White, Chad Ochocinco, Roy Williams.
TE - Owen Daniels, Donte Rosario.
DEF - Seattle, Buffalo.

My dillema is this; I'm keeping Turner, Portis, & Roddy White. Those 3 I'm sure of. But who do I keep out of Roy Williams and Chad Ochocinco? I know Chad will get his numbers like always (except last year), but I think Roy Williams could be due for a big year with T.O. gone. I've been going back and forth on this for days, lol. And the more I read about Matt Schaub, the more I consider keeping him, too.

So, the question is..
1. Roy Williams or Chad Ochocinco?
2. Keep Matt Shaub or listen to who other people dropped at QB and try to grab one? In other words, will Matt Schaub be top 5-10 this year?

Thanks in advance!

Funny enough, I just answered in your thread too but I'll post what I said here:

Well, I'd keep OchoCinco over Roy more because I really don't think Roy will do much of anything this year moreso than liking Chad this season. Chad has always been wildly inconsistent from week to week which is not something I personally like dealing with but being a WR2 for you could be a positive thing as he could single handedly win you some games even if he doesn't perform well week to week.

I wouldn't keep Schaub though...he's really a borderline top 10 QB right now and that's not worth anything above a pick in the 8-9th rounds of drafts which means that being kept as a 5th keeper is really out of the question. I'd throw him back and use that extra spot to draft someone at RB/WR who will help you more this year, I'd concentrate on RB first but if there's a good WR available it wouldn't be a bad choice either.

Alright Matt, FYI I've already made these picks but I'm starting to second guess myself. I'm contemplating trying to make a move, but I'm not entirely sure that's necessary. I'm kind of at a standstill right now, I need someone to help me either accept the choices I've made or to set something in motion.

This is a 10 team PPR IDP dynasty league entering it's third year. The scoring is a little screwy: 1 pt/20 passing yards, 6 pts/passing TD, 1 pt per 10 rushing/rec. yards, 1 pt/2 rushing attempts, 6 pts per rush/rec TD, 1 pt/reception, 1 pt/10 return yards, 10 pts/return TD.

Starting Lineups: 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 2 RBs/WRs, 1 TE, 1 PK, 1 TM, 2 DBs, 2 DLs, 3 LBs

MY TEAM
QB: M. Ryan, M. Schaub, B. Roethlisberger, S. Rosenfels
RB: M. Jones-Drew, S. Jackson, M. Turner, J. Addai, C. Benson
WR: B. Marshall, B. Edwards, H. Ward, T. Ginn, S. Rice, J. Cribbs
TE: G. Olsen, K. Winslow, O. Daniels (i know...working on it)
etc...

The first 8 picks of the draft went as follows: (1) Knowshon Moreno, (2) Chris Wells, (3) Shonn Greene, (4) Michael Crabree, (5) Donald Brown, (6) LeSean McCoy, (7) Matt Stafford, and (8) Bernard Scott

What direction should I have gone in with the next pick and my early second rounder? (My defense is solid...don't worry about a LB or DL here).

Matt B,
Whats up man?? I'm in a 10 team league, standard scoring, keeper league. Joined up and got the only team available. My two best choices were Tomlinson and Fitzgerald. Took LT. Anyways, I was just wondering if there was any holes in my team that you can see need to be filled. If so, how and who shuld I look to replace them with?

QB-Mcnabb
RB-LT
RB/WR-Ryan Grant
WR-Randy Moss
WR-Calvin Johnson
TE-Brent Celek
DST-JETS
K-John Carney
Bench- Thomas Jones, Leon Washington, Larry Johnson, Trent Edwards, Lee Evans, Bernard Berrian, Percy Harvin, and kevin Boss. I feel like the further the season goes on, the more trade leverage I will gain with a lot of my bench. Most of my starters also have different bye weeks than my bench. Thanks for the Help!! It's much appreciated to get an experienced opinion.

At that spot I probably would have went with a WR there since it was so RB heavy early on but a guy like Andre Brown wouldn't be a bad choice either depending on how much you like him. I probably would have taken someone like Percy Harvin or Jeremy Maclin there.

At the 2nd round spot I'd probably go for just best available RB or WR. If Brown was still there if you didn't take him in the first then he'd be the best pick, otherwise there's probably someone like Rashad Jennings, James Davis, or one of the WRs who fell further than anticipated.

The team looks good...I haven't a clue how you managed to get Moss and Calvin Johnson after going LT in the first but nice work on that. I like McNabb "ok" but it really depends for me how early a pick you spent on him...he's a guy I'm always hesitant about because he's so injury prone and he really doesn't put up big TD numbers even when he's healthy which is kind of a downer.

I like your bench okay...but the only issue is that you don't really have any "low risk" types down there...if some of them work out well then you could be in great shape but the alternative is also possible that you don't have them work out and end up with weak depth. Jones/Washington should work out as a solid backup, Larry Johnson has plenty of potential if he gets a large load this year and I like Edwards as a backup although he's got some injury issues of his own. Evans is okay, same with Berrian and Harvin but it's a pretty steep dropoff after your 2 starters. I don't really like Boss at all and I wouldn't even bother keeping him...I'd drop him and grab someone who has potential to breakout...who are the guys available for you?

Whats up Matt,

My question is pretty brief. I drafted Keller as my TE and I have Boss on the bench. Celek recently was dropped by an owner...should I drop Boss for Celek. I love his potential in the Eagles offense and McNabb will find him a lot this season. Thanks!!!

MattB,

Mine's a little convoluted, so my apologies...

12-team, standard scoring (no PPR) keeper league, and we keep 3 players. (1QB, 1 RB, 1 WR)

If keepers were picked today, my 3 would be Cutler, Gore, Anquan. Not thrilled with two of those three, so I have the following trades either offered out or offered to me:

I give: Cutler
I get: C. Johnson

I give: my 3rd round pick (10th overall)
I get: Matt Ryan and his 5th round pick (12th overall)

Am I tinkering too much? Should I just stand-pat with the three I have and hope for the best? Or roll the dice with these offers? (I would look to move Gore for picks if I land Johnson)

Drop Boss for Celek in a heartbeat...I don't think Boss will ever be a great fantasy TE and Celek has tons of potential in the Eagles system. I think that one is a no-brainer.
