Keeper/Dynasty League Rules

Postby RxExAx » Sun Aug 02, 2009 12:19 am

I'm constructing a new keeper league/ dynasty league (in honesty I don't really know the difference) for the upcoming season. It's slated to have 10-12 teams, at this point probably just ten. But I'm having a really hard time coming up with a good set of keeper rules. Things I'm trying to avoid: Auction draft - they take forever, and I don't want to deal with doing them online without a good place and where all of us are in separate states, some separate countries. The other thing I want to avoid is making people lose a pick for keeping someone, I think the best way to do this is to force teams to keep players, but I guess if forcing everybody to keep the same amount of guys is bad - then allowing teams to keep certain people and not forcing it upon everyone - the best way to do it is to require them to forfeit a pick.

One concept I constructed in my head is simple - everyone must keep 3 guys, period. 1 guy for 3 years, 1 for 2 years and 1 for one year.

Really though, I'm new to the realm of keepers for football, and have been involved in keeper baseball - I think it's working to my detriment and not as help for me. So please! Anyone who has a good set of keeper rules that can help me, I'd really appreciate it!

A dynasty league is one where the owner has the option to keep all of their players from year to year,

I think the dynasty league I am in has the ideal set-up.

First, decide on a max roster size. The league I joined 3 years ago has a max of 20 players.

After your initial season everyone gets a first round pick provided they drop at least 1 player. After that, where you draft depends on how many players you dropped. For example, if I dropped 6 players and you dropped 7 players, you would get to start drafting one round ahead of me after the first round.

Our league has the top 6 teams play for the championship in the postseason and the bottom 6 teams play for the top pick in the next year's draft. The winner of the bottom 6 teams gets the first pick, 2nd place gets 2nd pick and so on. The winner of the championship(top 6 teams) gets the last pick, 2nd place gets 11th pick and so on. This is done to prevent an owner from intentionally losing games in the postseason to get the top pick.

This way the strong teams get to keep their teams intact while the bottom teams, who will probably drop more players, get better draft slots to help build their squads.

Let the owners keep as many or drop as many players as they want.

I honestly couldn't imagine running the draft in a dynasty any other way.

I won't even play a redraft or a keeper anymore.

You can make it as simple or as complex as you want. It sounds like you want it simply.

Keep 3. No more then 2 at any one position. No loss of picks, everyone keeps 3. As long as owners know it going into the draft they will be fine with it. Keep it as a simple snake style 18 round draft and you are done.

Complex... salary caps, loss of rounds, rookie vs verteran keepers rules... the list is endless and it is enjoyable but not where you should start commishing a league.

Simple but more challenging is what Spider touched on... the Pure dynasty. I play mostly in dynasties now as I like building teams and don't mind waiting to produce soemthing I feel is my own.

24-32 round inaugural draft and everyone keeps everyone.
