Ryan Grant or Pierre Thomas?

Postby Thursday » Sat Aug 15, 2009 12:10 am

I'm down to one of these two guys to draft as my #2 RB. They seem to be ranked very closely together. My question is a simple one: in a non-PPR, keeper league, which do you draft? Pierre Thomas or Ryan Grant?

I'd say Thomas, speaking as someone who owned Grant for 2 seasons, and had to decide between keeping one of them for this year.

Thomas looked fantastic in all of his starts and put up good numbers. Bush is just downright fragile too, and he isn't an every down back. Thomas fits that role better. Will Bush still get 10-15 touches a game? Sure, Thomas will be the every down and goal line back though.

Grant was downright awful last year as he continued to battle his hamstring injury. He wasn't accelerating and hitting the holes fast enough off the line. He still had "okay stats", but it wasn't until the end of the year that he really returned to the form of the prev. season. You have to remember too that Brandon Jackson and Dyshaun Wynn aren't bad RBs either. In fact, Grand really was picked up by Green Bay when Brandon Jackson was injured and Wynn was having concerns too. If both of them had been healthy, Grant would have never had his window of opportunity. I honestly think that if Grant falters this season, one of those two will get more carries.

I would Take Thomas.

Help with mine please?

I'd go with Pierre Thomas. Even though he's not as versatile as Reggie Bush, he's all but gotten the nod this year for a few reasons:

He's had an excellent camp, has gotten stronger, and is going to get more carries: http://www.rotowire.com/Pierre-Thomas-g ... -spnfl.htm

Reggie Bush isn't healthy, so Pierre is the much more stable back in New Orleans: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/ind ... y_football

Thomas is also going lower than his value would indicate due to the 'value' of his name, or lack thereof

Ryan Grant is a solid number 2. While he'll never reproduce his epic season from 2 years ago, he's in for a solid year after the letdown from 2008. There is the concern of Brandon Jackson taking his carries, as well as Aaron Rodgers's ability to run with the ball. The O-line is also getting older, which shouldn't work in his favor.

He does look to be a workhorse this year, and if he is explosive he has a shot at a top 10 RB season, but I think Pierre is the much safer bet.

PT for sure, as already stated, Grant does have upside but Pt is going to have a great year. Bush is being weined (SP?) off of his carries and PT is taking full advantage.

I like Grant to rebound and have a productive year this year. He held out of training camp last year and then pulled a hamstring and was never healthy for the season, but he still produced decent numbers, just not big td numbers. This year he is healthy, in camp on time and will post better numbers this year. Thomas will have a decent year, but I can still see NO trying to use Bush often to try and get something out of there #2 overall draft pick. Good luck.

This is a toss up. Both are going to be good but I see more upside in PT.

PT: Does have Bush but he is a flanker/wr role more than RB. PT gets goal line carries in a high powered offense. Gotta love that. But slight RBBC

Grant: Will bounce back and the main RB in GB. I just see his "high" being lower than PT.

I take P.T because he will get you 1200yrds 10TD and could break into a top 7 RB role this year. He should tear it up, just like in weeks 11-16 last year. Bush has never done well and always gets hurt. PT: Top end RB2 Grant low end RB2, Bush/Flex/RB3 more value in PPR league.

GOod luck
