Helping a buddy plan for an upcoming draft and he has #2 overall pick. Assuming AP goes #1, he is questioning to take Brees #2.
This league is non-PPR and they start 2 QBs, 2 WRs, 2 RBs, 1 RB/WR flex, TE, K, DEF
He was looking at last years production (with this years scoring) and noticed how much higher QB points were. Normally I would say... go RB and take QB a little later, but they do start 2 QBs.
Looking at the scoring from last year... the top point getter by position are...
What do you all think??? It's only 8 teams so his 2nd/3rd round picks should produce a couple solid RBs. Then could lock up #2 QB and best RB or WR with 4th/5th pick? Since he only needs to start 2 WRs each week (and they don't produce as many points as QBs and RBs) I thought maybe biting early on Brees could work.
in my draft, i had the #7 overall pick (in an 8 team league). even though brees had a ton of points last year, people will still most likely go for the beast RBs and WRs before any QBs. If your friend can hold on, he should be able to get him in the late 2nd round. that's what i did. just cross your fingers that no one takes him before then!
If they start 2 QBs, and get 6 points for a TD, plus bonus points for lengthy TD passes and yardage, and no PPR, I think its a decent idea to take Brees at #2. Someone else might bite at Brady and Manning, leaving some solid options for RB when it snakes back down to him.
I would definitely snag Brees here. The scoring differential is pretty big and you have to start 2 QB's compared to starting 5 combined WR/RB's. In an eight man league I might even think about getting another stud QB with my 2nd or 3rd round pick.
Comparing QBs to RBs is like comparing a lot of things, but certainly not Apples and Oranges. Anyways, with the requirement to start 2QBs, drafting is a little different here. I would certainly look at taking Brees, but personally, I would see if anyone in the 5-8 range is interested in moving up. You can trade draft positions straight, ask to swap 3rd round picks, etc.
If you decide to move down, you'll obviously need to ensure Brees will be on the board. Risky, but if you know tendencies of the other drafters, you could get by.
In a league that starts 2 qb's, all quality starters are gone by rd 4-5. I have no problem drafting Brees, Brady, Manning in the 1st rd with any pick here.
You really could go either way but I'd probably still go RB here. The reason being that there are only 8 teams.
If the league was much larger, say 14 teams, then I'd definitely get Brees. Larger leagues that start 2QB's almost force you to draft QB earlier than normal. You don't want to be "that guy" that's stacked at RB or WR but has to rely on Shawn Hill and DeMarcus Russell as your starting QB's, especially considering the scoring advantage that the QB position has in this league.
I think you can get 2 stud RB's in rounds 1-3 and also a stud WR in rd 2 or 3 and get a decent QB like Matt Ryan, Eli Manning, maybe even Kurt Warner in Rounds 4 - 6. If the league were larger, I wouldn't wait this long though.
Also, as mentioned above there is a chance, albeit slight, that Brees is still there in round 2.
In the end though, if he REALLY wants Brees....then take him, but get 2 RB's and a WR in the next 3 rounds.
