While Plax did potentially endanger people in the club, Plax claims he was searched and allowed in, security knew he was carrying a gun. Plax was overwhelmed by fans and he was escorted to another part of the club so he could have privacy. When he was going upstairs his gun slipped down his leg and plax "accidentally" grabbed the trigger and the gun dischared. That Plax's side of the situation. In an interview he did I believe he was sincere and it was an accident. I do feel he should have been punished because the law is what it is, but the circumstances should have been weighed. I live in NM and an unregistered gun wouldn't have landed him jail time, the discharging of the weapon would have. 20 mos for good behavior seems too much. A year, out in 6 mos. for good behavior, then some supervision and community work would be more like it IMHO.

And I think that is the point that maybe some people haven't or are refusing to acknowledge. Maybe it is based on culture, worldview, or some other intangible that shapes the way people think, but experiences in NM and many other cities are way different than experiences in NYC. An unregistered hand gun won't land you jail time there likely because there aren't hundreds of thousands of uncaught-criminals walking around with them. NYC has a problem with violent crime and the use of unregistered hand gunds.

While I too, think that his sentence is steep, I understand why the law is there and I acknowledge the importance of the law. I really don't care much more than that. Plaxico knew the law or he should have. Either way, he is 100% responsible for his crimes and just because we think the sentence is too long, NYC has a responsibilty to its citizens to keep guns off the street and reduce crime.

Again - Plaxico is 100% responsible for his crimes.

NEW YORK -- Former Super Bowl star Plaxico Burress was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison for possessing a gun at a night club.

The former New York Giants star tearfully told his family goodbye as he surrendered to begin his prison stint for attempted criminal possession of a weapon after accidentally shooting himself in the thigh.

Burress was indicted on two counts of weapon possession and one count of reckless endangerment and pleaded guilty Aug. 20. He had faced a minimum sentence of 3 1/2 years on those charges if convicted at trial. He pleaded to the lesser charge and agreed to the two-year term.

With time off for good behavior, Burress likely will serve 20 months. He will be monitored an additional two years after he is freed from prison, which could come as early as the spring of 2011.

The Giants released Burress in April, but the 32-year-old told ESPN he hopes to resume his NFL career when he completes his sentence.

Before the hearing began, Burress played with his preschool-age son, Elijah. Then he hugged and kissed his wife, child, father, grandmother and stepmother...
