Why do we bother playing with kickers

Postby Smipims » Mon Aug 24, 2009 1:41 pm

If "pick a name out of a hat" seems to be the best strategy, why even bother?

I'm just thinking it'd be more fun and and less a roll-of-the-dice to play without kickers. How many times did you lose a week because your opponent picked up a random kicker who got 22 points? It happens enough and is random enough where I don't think standard leagues should include kickers.

Just read some analysis on mock drafts where people explain their picks.

"Ryan Longwell - I Needed A Kicker." Nothing about skill, team prowess, or anything.

I spend way too many brain cells each week figuring out which kicker to play off the waivers.

Having kickers on a fantasy team cures the utter, unattached boredom one has of watching extra points and chip shot field goals. When watching a game with friends, isn't it fun to be the only one freaking out that the opposing team's kicker missed the extra point in a blow out loss? Being 'that guy' is what it's all about, friend. Plus, good kickers = hot chicks.

HELL YEAH KICKERS!! Gotta love rooting for that offense to stall around the 35 yard line becasue the only guy you got going in that game is the kicker..... I never rate them.. I only draft John Kasay.. Why? Hell I dont know, I just always have him and I get jealous if somebody else has him... He's not even close to the best guy but he's mine... O:-)

I start looking at weather and dome kickers later in the year. If Kasay is going to Green Bay or Chicago and its -5 degrees with snow and wind then I will get some scrub kicking in a dome for that Sunday... ;-D

I agree for the most part - fantasy football relies enough on luck without introducing kickers into the equation, which make outcomes even more luck based. But it just feels more football-like with a kicker.

We added kickers last year, but only as a part of our DST and only giving them credit for FGs. So if you own PHL DST, then you automatically get Akers and he is your kicker. It seemed like a neat idea, but it really ended up nothing more than a gimmick. I ran the numbers last year and the DST really set the tone for how many points were scored from that position each week. There was no notable difference in the DST rankings after factoring in the kickers.

I think it is time to give points for Kick holders or long snappers. Each succesful conversion is a point. they deserve name recognition as well :-)
