I've seen Barber ranked at the bottom of that second tier of RBs, behind Slaton, Westbrook, Gore, etc, and in front of the next tier like Thomas, Grant, Ronnie Brown, K. Smith, etc.
Is this correct?
Or will Felix take over eventually this season and Brown, Smith, Grant, etc are safer picks?
Put it this way: You have Barber, Brown, Grant on the board... who do you take?
I think he is, I stay away from him for the most part where he usually goes. I honestly think Felix will end up being the better fantasy pick this year barring injury.
I think that Barber is properly slotted there, after Slaton, Westbrook, and Gore. I might take Ryan Grant ahead of Barber because Grant has little competition for carries and is in camp and healthy this year.
The thing with Barber is this. He is more effective in a RBBC as long as he figures to get goal-line carries. Felix Jones and Tashard choice only help Barber stay fresh. Barber was a more effective Fantasy player when he shared carries with Julius Jones in '06 -- Barber got all the easy TD's and he missed less time from injuries. He had 14 TD's on only 135 carries in '06. Once Barber became an unquestioned starter last year, he broke down. He should get around 200 carries, any more than that and he's a risk to go down later in the year from fatigue.
I expect bigger things from Barber in 2009, probably 1,000 rushing yards and 14 TD's. He's inside the top 12 Fantasy RB's in standard leagues. Not a solid RB1, but a good choice early in the second round if you can get him.
Given the choice of Barber, Brown, and Grant, I'd definitely take Barber. I'd actually put Barber ahead of Westbrook also, just based on the risk factor and McCoy possibly stealing carries.
However, I think there is a good chance that a better option is available at WR when those RBs are being picked (late 2nd/early 3rd). I had similar options picking 5th in a 12 team league and went RB/WR/WR in the first three rounds this year.
It's actually the first round of a keeper league draft. I have pick 7. Roddy White and Steve Smith are the top available WR, but both will likely be gone.
Other WR will be Housh, Bowe, Berrian, V. Jackson...
I have 1-7, 2-4 and 2-6. I was planning on going RB, WR, WR or if Kevin Smith slips to 2-4, RB, RB, WR.
I love how down people are on him. If you ignore the games at the end of the year he wasn't healthy and nobody started him, he got 1250 total yards and 9 TDs in 12 games. Yes please, more of that. Spend a 13th rounder on Choice for the RZ handcuff and it seems you are guaranteed >> 10 TDs over the year and about 1500 total yards. TO gone, Roy being hurt, and Felix's toe... this all seems like good news to me for Barber owners.

This is along my line of thinking. His best performance as a fantasy back came in a "committee" situation where he was receiving fewer touches but was able to stay healthier and do more with those touches including getting the goal line and scoring TDs on a prolific offense. I have him pegged at around 1400 total yards (1050 rushing, 350 receiving) and 13 total TDs which for me puts him right near the borderline top 10 RB and I think he's within the top 10 in PPR leagues by the season's end.

If there's a premium value on WR's I might take VJax or Bowe and hope Barber or K Smith is there for you at 2.4
I don't know what is in your draft pool so can't really give you accurate advice. But Barber is an undervalued player in Fantasy circles this year imo...

That's the thing, in general I don't think people are down on him which is why he is going in the second round. I personally just think that is a bit to high. Roy being hurt/TO being gone certainly is not a good thing for MBIII though, RBs are only made better by productive receivers that force teams to respect the pass and not load the box.

I've seen him falling quite a bit in drafts actually...which is why I've been able to grab him in a lot of drafts. The only drafts I've seen him go in the 2nd round in are the one's where I've drafted him in the 2nd as my RB2.
