Need QB Help: Put Ray Rice or McFadden On the Block?

Postby mm92280 » Sat Aug 29, 2009 3:07 pm

My 10 team H2H non-keeper league requires us to start 2 QBs every week. I am very set with my top QB, Tom Brady, as long as his shoulder isn't a serious issue. However, I much less convinced about my #2QB, where I currently would platoon Trent Edwards and Jake Delhomme. I view both of them as below average #2 starters and am looking seriously at upgrading. The biggest trading pieces that I have would be at RB, which is where I have the most depth. In particular, I have looked at trading away either Darren McFadden or Ray Rice to get a legit upgrade from Trent Edwards (I would like to keep Delhomme as my backup #3 QB). I actually really like both them, as they are both highly talented, and believe that they have a pretty good shot of topping 1,000 yards rushing if they stay healthy. My question is, which one would you offer up for trade in a deal to upgrade at QB2.

I have been trying very hard to try a get a clear upgrade like Matt Ryan, Jay Cutler or Matt Schaub (Schaub may be a bit of a reach considering how high people are on him this year) and I don't really want to just give one of them away unless I get a QB that I know for sure will be a serious improvement over Edwards. The other idea that I have thought a little about is if either McFadden or Rice can't help me get a new QB2 that I like, then I have considered keeping them both and putting Pierre Thomas up for trade, which should definitely give me what I want from a QB perspective. Thomas is my #3 RB, so if I traded him, then I would use either Rice or McFadden in that situation (it would depend on their matchup and recent productivity, of course). I actually think that a Rice/McFadden combo is still a pretty good RB3 situation.

So, what do you guys think? Should I take the easier route and offer up McFadden or Rice (if so, which one)? Should I go all-in and put Pierre Thomas up for trade and use Rice/McFadden as my RB3 combo? Whatever thoughts you guys have would be greatly appreciated.

Here is my team as it stands today:

QB: T. Brady
QB: T. Edwards
RB: L. Tomlinson
RB: C. Johnson
WR: TJ Houshmanzadeh
WR: V. Jackson
WR/TE: D. Jackson
WR/RB: P. Thomas
TE: C. Cooley
K. N. Kaeding
DEF: Carolina

Bench:

J. Delhomme (QB)
R. Rice (RB)
D. McFadden (RB)
D. Sproles (RB)
P. Harvin (WR)
J. Morgan (WR)

I'm not completely familiar with relative values in 2 QB leagues, but it looks like you have a very strong team. At a minimum I'd offer Pierre Thomas for someone like Romo or Schaub. I'd be very happy with a McFadden/Rice platoon at RB3. If you can get Rodgers, I'd even offer Chris Johnson and be happy with Thomas/McFadden/Rice as your RB2/3. A combination of Brady/Rodgers would make you very tough to beat and your RBs would still be very solid.

Well if you were offering either Rice or McF to me you wouldn't be getting much in return. Both rb's are pretty much in a rbbc situation and who knows what you will get form either rb. I think McF has the higher upside over Rice, mainly because he was a high round draft pick. I think what you need to do is find a team that is deeper at qb and a bit thin at rb and look to make a move with them. Good luck.

This is the catch. Cutler, Schaub, McNab,Palmer are teams #1 QB. So they will not trade them for a #2/3 RB.

I think you have two solid back up QB's in Edwards and Del. I would play the match up game. Who has the best match up is who I start. You can start 3RB's so having 4 is very nice.

Wait for McFadden and Rice to blow up this year, then you have HUGE trade bait for a top QB and more.

Right now I would not give up Rice or Run DMC for a slight upgrade at QB 2

I would wait to make a deal. I think that you will be okay with Brady/Edwards to start the season. Wait until Rice or Mcfadden have a big week before making a deal. I am very high on Ray Rice this year and I expect his value to increase as the season goes on

I agree with the above. The value atm is minimal. Wait for one of them to have a big game and then try to make a deal happen.
