Brandon Jacobs or Steve Slaton?

Postby IronBMike » Wed Sep 02, 2009 8:25 am

Straight up, who is going to have the better fantasy year?

I like Slaton a lot, but sometimes rookies drop off big time after surprising the league.

This is a non-PPR league, btw.

Provide feedback and I'll do the same for you ;-D

In non PPR I kind of like Jacobs this year. The Giants have suspect receivers and will run the ball alot. Jacobs is a beast !

Agreed, I don't think Coughlin will be looking to the air very much this year.

The problem is that Jacobs is an injury concern and on my team I can't afford injuries at the RB position:

LT
Slaton
LenDale White
Fred Jackson
Sammy Morris

If I were to trade Slaton and Jacobs went down with an injury like he susually does...I'm in trouble.

The Giants will be running a lot. Thats exactly why you should go with Slaton. It'll be a three-headed RBBC in new york with Bradshaw, Ware, and Jacobs (admittedly Jacobs will get more than Ware and Bradshaw though) and defenses will be loading the box with at least 8 defenders in anticipation of NY running the ball. Houston on the other hand throws a lot and will keep defenses honest, plus there's no RBBC with Slaton getting the overwhelming majority of the carries.

well, part of my fear with Slaton was Chris Brown poaching goal line carries, and as a result of the risk, I've been more down on Slaton than most. PPR I'd still lean w/ Slaton over BJ, but non PPR I would take a BJ.

I just read earlier this evening that this fear has been confirmed, as not only is Brown officially the short yardage back, but he is the red zone back....Uh oh for Slaton.

Texans coach Gary Kubiak admitted for the first time Thursday that Chris Brown is the team's goal-line back.

"Our goal is to use him basically as a short-yardage runner, a red zone runner and Steve's (Slaton) backup," revealed Kubiak. "He's shown flashes this preseason that he's still got it in him. That's important to our team." Kubiak's statement confirms the widely held speculation that Slaton would lose red zone touches to the bigger back. As a potential vulture, Brown gains some value in TD-heavy leagues Sep. 3 - 7:06 pm et

You can't get caught up in the "he's an injury risk" crap. Any RB is susceptible to injury, it's not like Jacobs has missed any significant time due to a major injury. I'd bet he will injure more unfortunate players trying to get between him and the goal line. The fact that Bradshaw spells him occasionally will keep him fresh but he is still the go to guy.
