Need some experienced help with Draft Strategy

Postby jarobert » Wed Sep 02, 2009 8:06 pm

I'm in a 12 Team H2H Cash League.

Starting roster is 1QB, 2RB, 2WR, 1TE, 1DEF, 1K, and an offensive utility spot. Basically any offensive bench player.

Scoring pretty standard. Not PPR. Bonus 10pts for 400 yds passing, 200 yds rushing or 200 yds receiving.

I'll be drafting at 9.

I guess I'm looking for advice on the first 3 or 4 picks.

At 9 should I be looking at RB, WR, WR?

Let's say at 9 Gore, Chris Johnson, one of Brady and Brees, and all of the top WR except for Fitzgerald are there.

Which way would you go? Especially considering the extra offensive position.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Depending on how the drafters in front of you go determines what your strategy is. If most of the picks are rb's you may want to try to get a moss and calvin johnson with your first two picks. If there are several wr's(2 or less) probably a wr then rb is the approach. If 3 or more wr's are taken before you pick then i would probably capitalize on taking two rb's that have fortunately fallen to you. Good luck! ;-D

I notice you didn't recommend either of Brady or Brees. Does that mean you recommend against picking up one of the elite quarterbacks in the first round?

not sure of your scoring, but if any offensive bench player includes a qb, i would take brees or brady, and the best rb/wr afterwards. qb's typically score the most points, so i would want to make sure i have a qb at my flex spot.
All I know is I know nothing.

So you advise to go against the grain or "flow" of the draft? I assume this is because you can expect the opposite reaction in the next round. Like if the first round passes and you notice that most players taken are RB's you can assume that next round will be about a run on WR's. So the object is always to stay a round ahead of the run? Is that what you're saying?

What I am saying is if alot of rb's go in the first round why take the 7th best rb if you can get a couple of top 5 wr's. Plus in this draft there are plenty of solid rb's you can get in the middle rounds. However, if wr's go early that should leave some nice rb's to get late in the round. So who you draft really depends on what position leaves you the most value. The reason to consider/not consider a qb early is based on scoring really. If you get 6pts per thrown td, then getting a top 5 qb early is valuable otherwise a romo or McNabb offers lots of value in the 4-6 rounds while you can get your rb and wr positions stacked early. Just my 2cps.
