Roster Critique and Suggestions Needed....WHIR

Postby Fasteddy » Sun Sep 06, 2009 10:32 am

I'm in a stardard league playing 1QB, 2RB's, 3WR's, 1TE, and 1DST
Anythoughts about my team would be greatly appreciated...

D Brees
M Cassel (R)

L Johnson
R Grant
C Williams (R)
W McGahee (R)

P Crayton
R White
S Holmes
D Hixon (R)
M Crabtree (R)... just speculating with this pick.

K Boss

R Longwell

Honestly, I don't like this roster.

Brees is a fantastic QB, but he'll have to carry your team. Your RBs are in major need of improvement. Larry Johnson goes very late in most drafts when did you pick him? Also, Crayton worries me. I really like Roddy White, but he's a low #1 WR and would need to be complemented by a better number 2.

Is this a 12-team league?

Kevin Boss worries me on TE. For instance, in my league, he was not even drafted. Maybe he'll have some upside, but I can't imagine too much on a power running team.

Steelers defense is good, won't necessarily win you games.

I'd look hard at trades and maybe the waiver for a sleeper or two. Are the Wells type RBs all drafted?
10 rushing yards - 1 pt
10 receiving yards - 1 pt
20 passing yards - 1 pt
All TDs - 6 pts (QBs favored)

Hey thanks so much for your help!

I hate to be a negative nelly haha; I think there some question marks on your team. That doesn't mean you might not have a winning team; this is all speculation. As the other poster suggested before; I assumed as well that you drafted in a 12 team or more league, with the picks you have. Ill start at QB; Brees is definitely going to have to carry the team. Nobody better to have at the position though. I honestly don't like Cassel as a backup, just because I don't know how healthy he is. If healthy; the Chiefs will throw a lot, so you're good there. RB I have to say is kind of weak; I don't know if you would be up to trading Brees for an upgrade at RB (and taking say a Mid-round QB in compensation- that's what I might do if I were in your position). Grant is a nice RB 2 to have; I'll think he will have a bounce back year. LJ is probably not the best RB 1 to have; which is why I agree that you should scour the WW for good RB pickups each week. Wr's are better; Roddy White is a beast for sure. I think Crayton and Hixon could be decent number 2's as sleepers, but they might not be consistent. I tried Holmes out last season and he dissapointed; maybe he'll do better this time. Boss could be the equalizer in the Giants passing game; but again, that's purely speculation. I'd rather have someone like Anthony Fasano or even Brent Celek; if you can pick one up. And I would drop Crabtree to get one of those guys for sure. D and kicker are great. There's some question marks as I said; but some creative trading or WW searching, you could end up with a good squad! Think about the Brees trade though; I personally like to trade players of really high value and get some upgrades at other positions if I can. Hope this helps, gl!

My thoughts...

QB - Brees is awesome. Play him every week. Cassel is probably OK as a backup.

RB - Grant is a nice pick. Not an LJ fan, but he's an OK #2. If you can find James Davis available, get him now. Glen Coffee would be another speculative RB pick. Keep McGahee over Cadillac Williams.

WR - Roddy and Santonio are OK, but you could use a bit better depth. Definitely replace Crabtree. I'm not high on Hixon, either. Earl Bennett is a nice sleeper - starting for CHI. Davone Bess is another -- kind of a Welker-clone starting in MIA.

TE - Boss is OK, but pedestrian. Shiancoe (if available, probably not) would be a good upgrade. A lot of people like Celek (PHI) at TE this year, too.

Best of luck.

I also wonder - is this league 12 teams, or is it larger?

QB
Brees is the gold standard. I'd replace Cassel (for now) with a proven commodity such as Kerry Collins.
RB
LJ is a low-end RB1. Grant is better, but not elite. Consider starting Chris Johnson over LJ.
WR
Roddy is a solid WR1. Holmes is a solid WR2 - a playmaker, but won't get the chances week-in & week-out. Crayton is a low-end WR2 - he'll suffer at the hands of Felix Jones & the Cowboys stated intention to run two-TE formations more often. Hixon's down in the low WR3 range - I.M.O., he isn't going to live up to expectations (Hakeem Nicks is already past him as a QB fave). Crabtree is injured & doubtful to start.
TE
Boss is a low-end TE1, but I'd stick with him anyway. You have bigger problems.
K & DEF
Both are very good.

The glaring weakness is at WR - you simply must trade for another WR1. Hold onto Brees. I'd try to find a Steeler fanatic and package Holmes & Steelers DEF for what you need.
