This is my 12 team keeper league. Non PPR. 6 point qb TD's. 3 point bonus for rb's/wr's going over 100 yards. other than that standard scoring. This is a pretty deep league of experienced managers. Things got tough half way through the draft. We also kept 3 which knocked me out of any chance on a top tier receiver. I kept Brees, Gore, Jacobs. That was my best value. Then I had pick 11 because of where I ranked last year. So my first pick was basically at the end of round 4.
I am thin at WR and I am thinking of picking up Earl Bennett and or Justin Gage. We all know Bennett is a sleeper with cutler throwing to him. Cutler knows Bennett well enough to go to Bennett's pro day and throw to him while he was a Bronco. I also like Justin Gage. Tennessee hasn't looked all that great in preseason and may need to throw more this year. Nate Washington is hurt making Gage collins number 1 option and Gage is 6-4. Gage had the best preseason of his carreer. I am thinking about droping Mendenhall and Betts for these guys to help my receiver situation. I am just thinking having receivers that could emerge as starters over rb's that probably will never start may be a good idea. Would this make me to thin at RB. Am I having to little faith in Edwards/Marshall?
I am also wondering if I should grab Coffee to handcuff Gore. What moves you guys think i should make? Any? Stand pat?
My Team:
Drew Brees (QB) NO RB Brandon Jacobs (RB) NYG RB Frank Gore (RB) SF WR Braylon Edwards (WR) CLE WR Torry Holt (WR) JAC TE Antonio Gates (TE) SD K Robbie Gould (K) CHI DST Philadelphia (DST)
Bench:
Matt Ryan (QB) ATL RB Rashard Mendenhall (RB) PIT RB Ahmad Bradshaw (RB) NYG RB Ladell Betts (RB) WAS RB Correll Buckhalter (RB) DEN WR Brandon Marshall (WR) DEN
Waiver Wire:
Josh Morgan (WR) SF Justin Gage (WR) TEN Michael Jenkins (WR) ATL Earl Bennett (WR) CHI 5 Peyton Hillis (RB) DEN 7 Jason Avant (WR) PHI 4 Justin Fargas (RB) OAK 9 0 Nate Washington (WR) TEN Isaac Bruce (WR) SF Glen Coffee (RB) SF
There's some decent talent available on your WW, so it doesn't seem like you'll have to rush to make a move. However, you are really thin at WR, so it would make some sense to add at least one. I would drop Betts for Morgan (I think he has the most upside of the group, but Gage or Bennett would be fine too), then dump Buckhalter for Coffee as your handcuff. Just be ready to make adjustments after week 1.
i would agree you are thin at WR i would go after morgan and drop buckhalter. i think betts is going to be a goalline guy that gets a lot of tds and no yards. coffee still is a question for me. gore came into camp really strong.
Why drop Buckhalter? He is a starting running back now; Mendenhall is only going to get the leftovers in Pittsburgh.
I think the play is to drop Mendenhall for Morgan, but this is really just an issue of personal preference in upside WRs. Can't really argue with Gage either; both he and Morgan have quietly cemented themselves as their teams' top options. I like Morgan to put up better numbers, but it's a little bit of a crapshoot.
Bennett is definitely a solid sleeper, but I think Morgan and Gage are the surer things right now.
If you want Coffee, drop Betts. They're both backups, but Coffee gives you Gore insurance and is more of an unknown (which is a good thing here, since the known factor of Betts is that he has been a fantasy football tease since his little "breakout" run at the end of the season in 2006).
So I'd drop Betts and Mendenhall for Coffee and Morgan, but there's a couple of ways to play this that aren't much better/worse than the alternatives.
It's a keeper league, that's why I'd drop Buckhalter. Even if he begins the year as the starter (still not set in stone), he won't finish it as the starter, and Denver is a mess. Mendy could be the starter in Pitt by the end of the season, has much more value in a keeper IMO. It probably makes sense to only drop Betts and keep them both, but if I had to choose, I'd keep Mendy.

True. For some reason, I totally neglected to take the keeper factor into consideration. That being said, I would drop Betts. Unless things unexpectedly drastically change in Washington, he won't win you any games.
