Violin

Postby Omaha Red Sox » Thu Sep 10, 2009 11:39 am

My son has recently begun taking violin lessons and I was wanting to be involved and maybe encourage him as he goes along by finding some cool songs out there where the instrument is implemented. Can be anything, rock, blues, country, hip-hop, whatever. Except R&B :-b :-P . I've found quite a few already and wonder if there are any other cool suggestions for us.

One's I've discovered...

Anything by Yellowcard
Eleanor Rigby - Beatles
Kashmir - Led
Dust In The Wind - Kansas
All Fall Down - One Republic
Seven Lives - Enigma
Running Dry - Neil Young
Live With Me - Massive Attack
Apocalyptica
Bitter Sweet Symphony

Also, I know about Dave Matthews and another band I can think of right now and, uh, not really about to listen to those songs over and over again. I like a few, very few, of DMB songs, but not enough to warrant hearing them consistently.

Few things: a) don't let him give it up, one of the biggest mistakes I ever made. Was really good at it. and b) when he needs a bigger one lemme know I still have mine. ;-D

awww man... I just threw out my violin. It was a name brand of some sort, too.. Stradacaster? Stradavary? :-?

I was in band when I was a kid, hated it. I played drums and trumpet. Mom wouldn't let me quit, so eventually I misbehaved enough to get kicked out.

I'd like to be able to play piano or saxophone, guitar as well. Alas, I am not musically inclined.

Don't overlook Charley Daniels band for violin. Devil went down to Georgia is a classic. ;-D

Thanks Chaoyi Shih for the sig.

Seems like you got most of the big ones, especially Yellowcard. Another one I can think of is Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) - Green Day.

Honestly, when I'm doodling around on my violin (been playing for 10 years) I just try to figure out the guitar parts to popular songs. :-B

Ooo, how do you do that? I can't read music so I'm probably of no help huh. :-B

He'd probably like Good Riddance, but I don't know how much I can stand it. :-b

Oh, he's not learning these songs right now, he just started. I'm just finding some cool one's as a means of encouragement.

A buddy put the Metallica/SF Orchestra into mp3 format. I spent the morning listening to it and, uh, filtering some of it out. :-D

Mizzou's student newspaper just had an article about a "violin-punk" band called Zox. I listened to them and they sound pretty good. I'd check out some of their stuff on Youtube and see what you and your son think of them.
