McNabb to stay in Philly

Postby joejlitz » Mon Jan 05, 2009 12:28 pm

From today's Philadelphia Daily News:
Guess who's staying? Jeff Lurie told the Boston Globe that the club has every intention of keeping Donovan McNabb as its starting quarterback in 2009. His solid, 23-for-34, 300-yard performance against the Vikings pretty much cemented that.

You Eagles fans have to get tired jumping on and off the bandwagon.

Philly may now want him to stay but...

ESPN's Sal Paolantonio reports that Donovan McNabb still wants a contract extension in the offseason.

McNabb reportedly also wants to know why he was benched in November against the Ravens. He is due $9.2 million in 2009 salary, which is plenty, and is signed through 2013. McNabb will be 36 that season and doesn't have much leverage. Perhaps McNabb just wants out of Philly altogether.

It's less of a bandwagon thing and more that many Philadelphians can be passionately irrational. We also have a newspaper that likes to instigate (the Daily News AKA the Daily Dirt) and a sports talk radio station that does the same. They play upon the Philly passion and make things to be bigger than they really are.

Fair enough, usually is one or two sources that take the lead and drive endless amounts of garbage.

It is a tough town to play in but I just don't see McNabb walking or trying to play hardball with the Eagles. HE has a huge contract paying out for another 4 years why would they extend that?

Philly is a VERY tough town to play in and not everyone can handle it. Scott Rolen couldn't or decided that he wouldn't anymore and that was a big reason that he left, IMO. McNabb has done an excellent job over the years of hanging in there when the fans and newspapers turned on him. I do think I saw something in the paper about him wanting/going to get an extension. If there is any Philadelphis sports athlete right now that it would be nice to see him retire in Philly without having played for any other city, it is Brian Dawkins. But after him, it's gotta be McNabb.

Perfect example...the McNabb controversy is old news now, right? Let's concentrate on the game this weekend! Here's the front page of the sports section today:

The article is pro-McNabb, but the headline, the front page posting, and the timing of the article just stirs the pot.
