Shutdown Corners and Their Effect on your WR

My defintion of "shut down" means they effectively neutralize the WR#1. As in the opposing QB does not target your side of the field.
Mathis fits this definition. He's a great tackler and a ball-hawk.

When I think of 'shutdown' I think of Deion Sanders. Not neutralizing the WR#1, but rather having the QB so cautious with him looming that he doesn't even throw to him. Or if he does the WR doesn't make the catch at all. Thats just me tho...

i havent seen enough of Revis (any actually) to really make a judgement...how did WR's look against him last year? i'd probably need to see a few more games before i would worry about starting WR's against him

Week 4 should be very interesting with NYJ @ NO. I may actually consider benching colston in one league where I'm deep at WR.

If NYJ can slow down NO then they are a bonafied stud defense. Revis has completely shut down 2 of the best receivers in the game. If you have other options you should seriously consider benching anyone playing Revis...where's he from? Oh yea, Pittsburgh.

How deep could you possibly be haha? I think what we saw with the Jet's secondary was that they were able to shut down both HOUs and NE's glaring #1 WR's in Andre and Moss; but there is one statistic we are disregarding. Both HOU and NE were without their #2's Walter and Welker. I think against TEN it'll be the same story, especially since there is no glaring #1/#2 WR on TEN but when it comes to NO there are just going to be too many receiving threats to deal with...at least they won't be able to deal with them as efficiently and effectively. Regardless, I'm still extremely optimistic about our D this year, nothing short of amazing. Sorry if I digressed slightly from the topic .

Some more guys are well on their way to earning the shutdown corner distinction:

Corey Webster, NYG. Shut down Santana Moss (wk 1) and Roy Williams (wk 2).
Leon Hall, CIN (and Jonathan Joseph). Shut down Brandon Marshall (wk 1) and Greg Jennings (wk 2).

a little tangent here.

nmamdi is the only shut down corner so far. very close behind him are bailey and revis.
bailey is on a defense with a better pass rush this year. this definitely helps him. can we say the same about nmamdi? oak last few years pass rush has not been feared. yet he still has.
revis is on a D with INSANE pass rush. stick him in oakland and can he do the same? my guess is not, but i won't take anything away from him--he's still very good.

another point to look at is how often they roll over the safety over the top. i recall moss saying they rolled one over on him a lot. in the revis int play, yes the safety was rolled over, but i don't think it mattered on that play. a combination of rush, 1.84 second release and moss poorly running it gave revis goods.
as for cincy, leon hall is a pretty good corner. i also recall someone saying he noticed safety help over greg jennings. the fact that the RT on GB got humiliated did not help rodgers find him.

so it's an entire team effor that shuts down a wr1, not just the corner, unless your name is nmamdi.
