Thinking ahead - Week 3 - Which DST to pick up? Play McCoy?

Postby sirchadwick1 » Mon Sep 21, 2009 9:28 am

My league settings - .5 PPR, 10 team league, no pts lost for fumbles - no pts gained for fumble recoveries

Woohoo, I won my 2nd game w/ 192 pts in my PPR league thanks to Andre and CJ4.24!

Anyway, I picked up the Falcons for week 2 and they were a slight disappointment. Who is a sleeper D for week 3 that I can look at? Someone dropped the Ravens D last week, but I'm sure I will have to use my #4 WW priority to get it - and I don't want to waste it just yet. Will the Ravens D rebound to the point where they're worth using it to pick up?

I'm eyeballing these week 3 defenses that are available...
CHI @ SEA - could be a good day for the Bears D if Hasselbeck sits.. keeping an eye on the situation
OAK v. DEN - I have a feeling we'll see quite a few ints in this game... just a gut
SD v. MIA - depending on how good the IND defense looks tonight against MIA... this may be worth a shot

Also, what do you guys think about McCoy this week against KC? I know it depends on if Westy will play or not... but I'm thinking at best Westy only plays a half. The Eagles should be able to run all over the Chiefs and I'm feeling 100+ yds and a TD or two from Lesean regardless. Is he worth playing over someone like Rice v. CLE, Kevin Smith v. WAS or dare I say CJ4.24 against a stout JETS run D? I know CJ put up a motherload of pts this week, but my God Houston is soft.

I need a D/ST for week 3 as well so i am interested in what others think about this thread also...(my PIT just isnt the same without Polamalu..)

Some defenses that are available in my league for wk.3....
I personally like CIN (vs. PIT), OAK (vs.DEN) and SF (@MIN) respectively...SD would be next but they have been giving up alot of points the first few weeks...it seems to always be a shootout with them thus far, but you just never know...i think CLE (@BAL) could be a sleeper this week, as those AFC East division games are always close and gritty...but i would rather have one of the aforementioned defenses instead of CLE if available...afterall, they are still the Browns...

As far as McCoy, i think its a little early to tell exactly what his role will be wk.3 against the Chiefs...and as terrible as KC is, they actually aren't too bad at defending the run....McCoy as a receiving threat may torch them though, KC is really bad at defending screens and pretty much anything through the air for that matter....(just look at what Flacco was able to do against KC...career high everything)..so a RB against KC might not be the best option...receivers are a different story...having said that, if you are really hurting for a RB this week, i think McCoy may be a legit option and may also find the endzone...depending on Westbrook's status ofcourse...

So if Westbrook is better by next Sunday, McCoy will probably get 10-20 touches, 60 or so yards and if your lucky a TD...i would say more if Westbrook is declared out, and McCoy will have a much better chance to score a TD in that case...really just depends on who else you got...i would probably play Rice vs.CLE over McCoy, but i would choose McCoy over K.Smith vs. WAS...and also over CJ...i would only sit Chris Johnson just bc the NYJ have really impressed me on DEF this season...i thought all the "Rex Ryan making their defense a top option" was all hoop-la and hype, but from the first two games, that certainly doesnt appear to be the case...

although you really cant go wrong with playing Chris johnson and Ray Rice...i think you could make a pretty good argument to play C.Johnson...CJ may end up torching the Jets, you never know :/ If it were me though, i would probably stick with Ray Rice and McCoy...Lendale White also makes me a little cautious about Chris Johnson...i dont think NYJ will let C.Johnson run wild like HOU did, and there is always a chance Lendale has a good game/TD run inside the 10...so thats pretty much where one man stands...

i need some serious WR help for week 3 if anyone has any good wr sleepers for this upcoming week...

For the defense i would go with Chicago by far over the other 2. The SD/MIA matchup may turn into a high scoring affair I have a feeling and Denver I'm sure will be good for a couple of those big 'how in the hell' plays. I like Chicago, cuz A. They looked real good again against Pitt after a strong showing against GB in GB week one. Plus Hasselbeck I'm 95%+ sure he will be out. Its a broken rib and with all the back problems he had last year they won't want to chance him being out for the rest of the year if he comes back and injures it worse. Plus the Hawks are confident in Wallace enough to tell Matt to sit this week. But thats golden IMO for the Bears.

As for McCoy, its tough for me to say start him over any of those three simply because Westy says he will play, but its a matter of how much will he actually play, and at what speed will it be? With that said I say locks to start this week are CJ.24 just because you don't want to get burned again and then Jets D yes has been stout, but look at the RBs they have face (and I'm not big on Slaton at all keep in mind) Slaton who I don't think is worth all the hype and Fred Taylor/Maroney who I also don't think are at the skill level as CJ, plus both teams played from behind most all day (I think NE was up at some point, could be wrong tho).

Smith is just a guy I can't see sitting even against a pretty tough Washington D, because he sees so many touches a game. He still managed 84 yards against arguably the best run defense in the league this week against the Vikes and still had 24 rush attempts even tho the Lions were down pretty much the whole second half.

The only guy I could see starting McCoy over is Rice, but even there I don't think its a great idea with the uncertainty of Westy and the Browns lack there of a run D. Obviously the Vikes put up 225 rushing yards with 3 rushing TDs, followed up with 186 rushing yards and 2 rushing TDs by Denver. I would start Rice under the impression that he will have a good yardage total, now the TDs is a totally different story as McGahee is hawking those now.

I still think that you should bench McCoy this week and see how he does and what kind of action/how much action he gets this week before inserting him in over the likes of CJ.24, Smith or Rice.

A big thanks to deluxe_247 for the sweet sig!

Yea, you make some good points about Chris Johnson vs. Jets...i am not that high on Slaton either lol...

But the Bears D are playing a SEA team with Seneca Wallace most likely at QB...they dont really know how SEA plans to attack b/c now they have Jim Mora as coach and not Holmgren...and i actually think Wallace's ability to get out of pocket will help him make some big plays against the Bears...i guess its just that i think the Seahwaks are a hard team for the Bears to prepare for this week...

And McCoy propbably shouldnt be used this week unless Westbrook's status doesnt improve very much...

Thanks for help with mine.

I'd go with Chicago.

You gotta play CJ here. It's not like the Jets shutdown the Pats running game. I think CJ is more explosive than any RB the Pats have. Should be fine there.
League One:
QB-Rodgers/E. Manning
RB-Charles, SJax, Gore, Green-Ellis, Hillis
WR-Wallace, Jones (ATL), Harvin, Wayne, Cobb
TE-F. Davis
D/ST-Jets
K-Bryant
