I think that most of Royal's success last year was due to Cutler and the attention that Marshall drew. I watched Royal all four years at VT and he never did anything that made me expect the kind of success he had last year. I missed out on him last year because I didn't believe he could sustain the success he had in his first few games, but I stuck to my guns this year and avoided him. Royal was the 3rd leaving receiver his senior year in receptions and yards(33 rec. and 496 yds). He never seemed to be a very good route runner, and most of his receptions came on short screen plays where he could get the ball in space. He always had plenty of quickness and speed and caught a few deep streaks, but VT never really had the QB's to exploit that talent. He was always excellent as a punt returner and I thought that was where most of his value would be to DEN. To me it seemed like VT ran reverses and screen plays to him to get him the ball in space because he wasn't able to get himself open running routes. I'm not any sort of football expert, but that has always been my impression of Royal.

There is one factor that needs to be considered before you drop Royal. Denvers defense has allowed 16 points through 3 games. Because of that, McDaniels has been allowed to call very conservative, clock-eating plays. Ask your self this question - do you think Denver's defense will continue to keep teams to under a touchdown? If not, and Denver actually get behind in a game (other than the last 20 secs against the Bengals), then it is not hard to imagine that the ball starts getting thrown around a lot more. Royal is very dangerous after the catch once defenses start sitting back giving him short receptions. If there is stash space for Royal then I would stash him. If you have short benches then there is no way it is worth keeping him.

Id be surprised if Royal end up better than 65 Catch, 700 Yard, 4 TD #'s..If I owned him, I would drop him

I'll give you a hint: he changed his name to Earl Bennett and/or Johnny Knox.

Royal no doubt has some talent, but his stats were greatly inflated due to playing on a team with a strong armed QB, and also due to the fact that defensive coverage was focused on Marshall. That second part probably wasn't the case the first few weeks, so maybe Marshall's touchdown will finally have opposing defenses respecting him.
