RBBCs & the Flex position

Postby Sex Panther » Fri Sep 25, 2009 10:32 am

I think it's pretty safe to say that RBBCs are no longer the trend in the NFL - they are the norm.

Timeshares are everywhere, the load back is a rare breed.

In situations where at least a 60/40 split is projected, does it make sense to start 2 backs from 1 team when the flex position comes into play (where you have the option to start 3 backs).

Listed below are what I consider relevant time shares for 09 w/ 09 & 08 PPG averages in standard scoring formats (no PPR) - all the players listed should be universally owned IMO.

Carolina -

D. Williams 15.0 ppg/17.8 ppg
J. Stewart 7.3 ppg/9.2 ppg

Panthers primary backfield PPG total - 22.3/27

Miami -

R. Brown 15.45/11.4
R. Williams 9.5/7.2

Dolphins primary backfield PPG total - 24.95/18.6

Indy -

J. Addai 8.3/9.7 (12 games)
D. Brown 7.95/non applicable

Colts primary backfield PPG total - 16.25

NYJ -

T. Jones 14/15.05
L. Washington 7.5/7.95

Jets primary backfield PPG total - 21.5/23

Tennessee -

C. Johnson 26.6/13
L. White 2.9/10.5

Titans primary backfield PPG total - 29.5/23.5

Baltimore -

R. Rice 11.1/6 (12 games)
W. McGahee 20.2/9.5 (13 games)

Ravens primary backfield PPG total - 31.3/15.5

Denver -

K. Moreno 5.8/non applicable
C. Buckhalter 11.15/non applicable

Broncos primary backfield PPG total - 16.95

Arizona -

C. Wells 3.15/non applicable
T. Hightower 14/7.7

Cardinals primary backfield PPG total - 17.15

NYG -

B. Jacobs 6.05/15.5 (13 games)
A. Bradshaw 5.8/4.3 (12 games)

Giants primary backfield PPG total - 11.85/19.8

Tampa -

C. Williams 14.1/8.6 (6 games)
D. Ward 9/10.2 (15 games NYG)

Bucs primary backfield PPG total - 23.1/18.8

Oakland -

D. McFadden 9.9/7.8 (13 games)
M. Bush 8.55/8.4 (11 games)

Raiders primary backfield PPG total 18.45/16.2

New Orleans -

R. Bush 9.7/11.8 (10 games)
M. Bell 14.4/non applicable
P. Thomas non applicable/11.6 (14 games)

Saints primary backfield PPG total 24.1/23.4

Now, if you happen to have a combonation of 2 guys from the same backfield who get 40% or more of their backfield touches do you ever consider starting both of them if you have the option of starting 3 backs?

It's very early in the 09 season - so these numbers are a bit scewed, I'm well aware that this is far from an exact science.

But looking at 08 -

I see the following as both startable, quality option in 12 team+ leagues w/ a flex position -

D. Williams & Stewart from Carolina - both every week startable if you lacked a good RB3 or WR3
R. Brown & R. Williams from Miami - Williams as a BYE week guy
T. Jones & L. Washington from the Jets - L. Washington as a BYE week guy
C. Johnson & L. White from Tennessee - both every week startable
B. Jacobs & D. Ward (when he was w/ NY) from the Giants - both every week startable
R. Bush & whoever is carrying the ball form New Orleans - R. Bush is a flex guy, who ever is the primary carrier was a good RB2.

Now looking at 09, again very early in the season, who, if any of these back field tandems (if any) do you guys see as both being worth starting as we move forward this season?

Saints, Ravens, and Jets in PPR I would say. Haven't seen enough of Stewart this year to say anything on Car.

For this week, I am seriously thinking of starting McGahee AND Rice this week against Cleveland...starting both could lock up 150 rush yds and 1 TD minimum (which would be 21 pts in standard scoring, and at 10 points/starting spot is nice).

With the offense firing on all cylinders right now, Addai & Brown are fast becoming both startable.

Addai & Brown have combined for 540 yards & 5 scores through 4 games - 84.0 FFpts, 21.0 PPG combined. Addai has 3 games of 10+ points - 11.7, 13.1, 15.6. Brown has 3 games of 10+ points - 11.0, 11.2, 10.6

Addai is currently the 14th highest scoring RB (45.3/11.3 ppg), D. Brown is currently the 24th (37.7/9.4 ppg).

With Henne under center, wildcat heavy, and no shame in playing both - Ricky & Ronnie are fast becoming both startable.

Ricky & Ronnie have combined for 729 yards & 7 scores through 4 games - 114.9 FFpts, 28.7 PPG combined. Ronnie has 3 games of 10+ points - 25.6, 11.5, 24.5. Ricky has 3 games of 10+ points - 11.8, 14.4, 15.6

Ronnie is currently the 4th highest scoring RB (65.9/16.5 ppg), Ricky the 11th (49.0/12.3 ppg).

Moreno and Buckhalter have turned into a nice PPR #2RB and flex so far.
