Captain patches on NFL jerseys

I noticed that the Captain patches on player's jerseys have stars underneath them, and that Captains on different teams have a different amount of stars. For example i believe Manning has 4 out of 5 while Warner had 2 or 3. Anyone know the significance of this? Just curious
