SAN DIEGO (AP) - Chargers outside linebacker Shawne Merriman isn't happy with a comment from general manager A.J. Smith that the team's play at times this year has been "soft and bewildered."
Merriman at first declined to comment after practice Wednesday, but then said: "That's an opinion of a person, and it's not needed. We know that we have to play better."
Merriman said the only opinions he's interested in hearing are those of his teammates.
The Chargers (2-2) lost 38-28 at Pittsburgh on Sunday night, falling behind 28-0 and allowing 497 yards of total offense.
Smith made the comment about the "soft and bewildered" play to The San Diego Union-Tribune in Wednesday's editions.
Smith didn't return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....After the way your defence got dragged up and down the field last Sunday night (especially by Mendenhall) I think your defence is quite soft right now.
I don't care what Merriman wants to hear. He doesn't get to moderate the thoughts and comments of fans and certainly of management. Team don't want bad comments? Play better, or deal with it. They've been pretty sad this season.
I don't think his comments are really that big of a deal, it sounds to me he is just frustrated. But it's usually not a good idea to say anything that could be interpreted as criticism of the GM if you are a player.
"That's an opinion of a person, and it's not needed. We know that we have to play better."
The phrase "it's not needed" could simply mean that they are not unaware of the situation.
Their Run D is one of the softest I've seen in a while. They are down there with DET, STL, HOU, CLE and the like. The GM was just pointing out the obvious. As an OLB he needs to pick it up or shut up.
