I know this makes sense to a lot of you, but seeing it like this is ponderous.
The Bucs cannot release Johnson because they would take an immediate $7 million cap hit and they're currently just $395,000 under the cap, so releasing him would put them $6.605 million over the cap.
so paying a player keeps them under the cap while firing a player puts them over the cap.
makes nonsense to me
