Backup QB/TE or more depth at RB/WR?

Postby taw856 » Sat Oct 31, 2009 6:17 am

MY TEAM (3-4)
QB P. Manning
RB R. Rice, S. Slaton, (L. Tomlinson), (S. Greene)
WR H. Ward, H. Nicks, S. Holmes, (G. Jennings), (S. Smith-CAR), (A. Gonzalez)
TE A. Gates
K J. Carney
DST Ravens

*standard CBS scoring league: 12 teams, 6-pt. passing TDs, no PPR.

Just a quick question here. Would you pick up a QB or TE to back up Manning or Gates or not even bother now that both guys are past their bye weeks? Clearly I'd never bench Manning or Gates, and my team obviously needs the help more at RB and WR (where it seems like I've managed to bench either Rice or Slaton at inopportune times all season long).

I'm not sure whether the slim pickings left on waivers are a sign I need to make sure I have a backup plan or a sign I might as well hope neither Manning nor Gates gets hurt since the replacement would be equally unreliable no matter who I do or don't pick up at this point.

The options would include...
QB: Mark Sanchez, Matt Cassel, Alex Smith, Matt Stafford, Chad Henne, Mark Bulger, Vince Young
TE: Greg Olsen, John Carlson, Zach Miller, Tony Scheffler, Kevin Boss, Fred Davis, Bo Scaife

i think you should stay put. your team is looking pretty solid and your WW/FA options aren't that great. IF manning or gates goes down, i'll bet those same guys will still be available. meanwhile, whoever you drop to get the backup will most likely get picked up. i just don't know who you would drop...

thanks for the help on mine...i am thinking i will hold onto choice for one more week to see what happens.

You have a solid team and there is nobody on your roster that I would drop. Worst case scenario is to trade if one of those players happen to get injured.

Thanks for your reply.

Nah, the two positions that you must have replacements for are RB and WR. TE I def. wouldnt worry about and you have a stud QB. As you said both are past their bye weeks.

Gates will never get benched. It might make sense to switch Gonzo with a backup QB since you have sick depth at WR already.

Who does SF play the last two weeks?

Find a backup QB that have illegally good matchups those last 2 weeks.

If you need a backup TE for later in case Gates gets hurt bad, you can drop Gonzo for Carlson, Scheffler or Davis.
