SAN DIEGO (AP)—The San Diego Chargers have released wide receiver Chris Chambers(notes) a day after he had a key catch in a 24-16 win over the Oakland Raiders.

Coach Norv Turner said the Chargers released Chambers because of the emergence of Malcom Floyd(notes) and the need to sign a linebacker because of an injury to Tim Dobbins(notes) on Sunday.

Chambers was demoted Sunday in favor of Floyd, yet still had a big catch in the win over the Raiders, which lifted the Chargers to 4-3.

Chambers was obtained at the trading deadline in 2007 from Miami for a second-round draft pick, and helped the Chargers reach the AFC championship game that season.

His production dropped off dramatically this season.

Don't be surprised if the Lions make a claim for him after he clears waivers...with CJ hurting and no other viable WR, he makes good short term sense in Detroit.

I wouldn't put money on this at all. Who I would put money on is Miami taking him back. They need a true possession receiver, hell a receiver that can actually catch the ball. Also whoever does take him on has to take on his hefty remaining contract, which I don't see Detroit doing.

What about St Louis. They are probably hurting at WR more than any team in the NFL.

Again there tho, why would St. Louis want to take that on? I could see if Chambers would be cheaper, but he comes with a pretty significant contract remaining that the new team would have to pick up. The main reason I say Miami is for one of the biggest factors, Miami still has a very legit shot at not only the conference but to make a run at any playoff spot, whereas the shot for the Rams and Lions went out the window after about the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th or even 7th loss. Just don't see the point in either the Lions or the Rams taking this shot when both seem to be on the brink or already in rebuilding mode.

I'd welcome Chambers back to the dolphins with open arms. Even if he's lost a step he could be an important part of the Fins offense with their lack of players that are able to hold onto the ball at the end of games.

What happened to this guy? He used to be a great possesion WR. He should get some playing time in KC.

Yeah Bazzy was right on the Lions grabbing him, no way we would pick up a big contract like that. I mean as it looks the Lions are in position to get the number one pick again.... Something they NEED to find a way to avoid. Chambers was going to go to a contender i had thought, and I was wrong. I figured someone like Miami or even Atlanta or something. Guess maybe hes lost a few too many steps or hes too expensive.

One good thing for him is that he should get some playing time in KC.
