Bye week WR fill-in: Earl Bennett or Mike Wallace?

Postby powpowmeow » Wed Nov 04, 2009 2:54 am

CBS standard league, 2 RB, 3 WR league, no PPR, 10 yds per pt + 6 pts for a TD.

Need a 3rd WR to fill in on the bye week, and have either Earl Bennett or Mike Wallace to choose from.
Bennett at home vs Cardinals (Cardinals: 233 ypg passing allowed, 11 tds, 7 ints)
Wallace on road vs Broncos (Broncos: 180.6 ypg passing allowed, 4 tds, 6 ints)

The CBS projection (which are always terrible) has Wallace (12 pts) much higher than Bennett (4 pts), but...

Bennett at home vs a pretty bad pass D (see stats above)
& I like the fact that Bennett has a "special" relationship with Cutler, having been on the same Vanderbilt team. He seems to get a lot of looks you might not expect.

Opposing my view is the site fftoolbox.com which I go to for a second (or third) opinion. They also have Wallace ranked higher for this week (albeit slightly), and have him listed on their "Pickups of the week" - here is their writeup for that:

Mike Wallace has been a steady contributor all season long and he's just waiting for that breakout game. Denver's defense may scare prospective Wallace owners away, but the combination of an attacking front seven and lock-down corners may actually mean good things for this slot receiver. Ben Roethlisberger isn't afraid to spread the ball around and he'll have to do so with either Holmes or Ward being shadowed by all-world cover man Champ Bailey. With the Broncos bringing steady pressure, Big Ben will be looking to his third option, trying to exploit those quick slants and seam routes that Wallace has been making his name with.

I also considered Mark Clayton as an option, then changed my mind. This is a 12 team league, and even with the shallow bench spots, there aren't a lot of great options for bye week fill ins left.

Thanks for your thoughts - you guys helped me out big last week with my hightower vs wells dilemma- :-D

It's probably also worth tossing out Bennett and Wallace's numbers to look at alongside the defenses they'll be facing...

Bennett has 25 catches for 334 yards and 0 TDs. 18 of the 32 points he has in CBS's scoring system came in his first three games.
Wallace has 21 catches for 368 yards and 2 TDs. He also has 40 rushing yards. 32 of the 50 points he has in CBS's scoring system came in his last three games.

Ultimately all of these numbers are close enough to make it still largely a toss up, and there's also some inherent randomness with WRs (sometimes poor stats in wins because their team runs the ball with the lead, sometimes good stats in garbage time of losses)...

...but my gut says Wallace is the better bet. While the defensive matchup favors Bennett, Wallace has been the slightly better player and has heated up while Bennett has cooled down. Take it with a grain of salt, but that's my hunch.

I am trusting Roethlisberger at this point way more than Cutler. Wallace has the better shot at deep passes and TD's where Bennett is the possession type receiver. I think Knox has stepped up as the #2 in CHI not Bennett. As your #3 I would take the shots at Wallace. Pitt coming off a bye and playing with the helium filled balls in Denver and oh yeah its Monday Nite!

great stuff here. i have watched a ton of football this year but not enough apparently, the knox/bennett/possession receiver thing should have made the decision for me - thanks for posting

Got a couple more options that I am looking at now -

In addition to Earl Bennett or Mike Wallace, I can go with Malcolm Floyd or Johnny Knox (recently dropped by another team)

Not only for this week, but also looking to keep one of these guys for future weeks when their matchup/potential for that week outshines Lee Evans (my 3rd WR)

Thoughts? Thanks all.

Hmm....I just don't know about Floyd. I mean Chambers did squat and was cut, now Floyd steps in and I just don't see that much production from him. VJax gets all the looks then Gates...plus LT and Sproles have to get their touches as well. He does have a nice Schedule down the Stretch.

Knox is an interesting option since Hester is a little banged up. He gets the long ball like Wallace but has way more targets. This week Knox should be a good play at home versus the Pass D of Arizona. For the long haul I would probably take the flier on Floyd since his QB is a little more trusty than Cutler.

I would go with Knox, this week and for future weeks
Help with mine: Warner or Big Ben? Charles or Maroney?
Stewie: [hitting on some co-eds] I must say, the most recent campus sporting event was quite spectacular.
Co-ed: Aw. Are you in a fraternity, little boy?
Stewie: Not yet, but I'm thinking of joining I Felta Thigh.
