My son has expressed interest in learning to play the guitar. Something I have never done but wished I would have learned when I was younger. Could someone point me in the right direction in purchasing a starter guitar and amp for him. I am not looking to break the bank on this as most with kids know, ideas come and go out of most kids heads, my son is right at the top of the list.

It's basically what I started with, you might run into a little trouble with the bottom bridge not being set high enough, which causes it to not work so well on the really high frets (21, 22), but in all reality a beginner won't be playing that high, and he won't have any need for those frets for awhile... likely after he's got a new guitar (buy a les paul!!! )

For a beginner it can actually be more difficult learning on an acoustic. Strings can be more difficult to get the full sound out of while an electric can hide some of the slighter mistakes a beginner will make. On an acoustic you'll hear every little mistake, missing frets, etc., that you make. I learned on an old Harmony electric.
