. . . it clicked this Friday morning when I was driving to a meeting listening to sportstalk radio. I figured out why I think Jim Rome is such a huge douchebag.
There are basically 2 sportstalk radiostations in the Bay Area, one is pretty good, and one has Jim Rome from 9 to noon. I made the mistake of switching over during a commercial on 680 to listen to 1050 (where Rome is).
Other than the fact that he loves to hear himself talk, that he goes out of his way to use as many retarded nicknames as possible in an effort to increase the level of his douchebaggery . . . is the fact that when you listen to him, you can actually hear him straining to artificially lower the register of his voice, trying to make it sound raspier, deeper, and more manly, whatever.
Listen to him using his natural voice here early in his career, as right before he gets manhandled by Jim Everett because he keeps calling him Chris (the female tennis player). Pay attention to how his voice sounds here.
now listen to the present day Jim Rome and his wannabe pornstar goatee attempt to sound more manly in this video clip (which is how he always talks these days . . . kind of like a dude straining to take a dump or something)
He is actually painful to listen to. It's amazing that this guy still has a job as I do not know one person who has every found him funny or entertaining (besides the Jim Everett clip).
On a side not, Amp, if you are a big sports talk radio fan, XM satellite radio is King. From 6am-7pm there are almost always good segments on. Mike and Mike, Colin Cowherd, Alex Van Pelt, and Dan Patrick -- all very good. Doug Gottlieb is on ESPN radio at 5pm EST. Haven't made my mind up on him yet, but all the rest a pleasant to listen to.
Sorry boys but Jim Rome is hilarious and entertaining. My favorite morning talk show is the Dan Patrick show but I also listen to Rome because he's usually clowning on someone in hilarious fashion. He's polarizing and if you didn't enjoy his brand of humor I can see how you might also hate his voice but personally, It doesn't bother me in the least.

Jim Rome is the talk equivalent of a scat sandwich. Really though the most hilarious part is how he tries to overcompensate for the fact that he is a little-weinered, never-was prick trying to hold his own among professional athletes and journalists. Classic case of little big-man syndrome. Lowering his voice to sound macho (go back and listen to those links I posted above. He is clearly trying to give himself a gravelly voice.
Any dude who has to give himself a nickname is bad enough . . . but when the nickname you chose is "pimp in a box"? . . . please. Exactly the sort of thing every good looking intelligent woman I have ever met rolls their eyes at.
And all of his stupid little nicknames for everything else to give the illusion that he is the leader of some sort of cool club, . . . "un-war," "clones," "man-ram" etc.
He is the type of dude who talks tough, but if you stepped to him in an alley when nobody else was looking he would wet himself.
