Reports out of Philly last night from NBC10 & 610 WIP's Howard Eskin say that Brian Westbrook is in the process of getting second opinions from several doctors regarding his possible retirement. Eskin stated that the problem is not Westbrook's head, but his left knee which is basically shot. His knee, not his head, was the reason he was hardly used in the Dallas playoff game because he has looked so bad in practice in the past few weeks. Westbrook is due 7 million dollars from the Eagles if he would play for them but the Eagles are not going to bring back the oft injured RB at that kind of money. Westbrook is seeking the second opinions to see if the shot knee could possibly pass physicals from other teams so he could move on but all current evidence points towards Westbrook's knee being damaged so much that he would probably fail the physicals so it is looking as if he will retire.

Eagles released RB Brian Westbrook.

Westbrook, 31, was apparently not amenable to a major pay cut. Coach Andy Reid indicated that the move was made now as a courtesy "to maximize Brian's chances of landing with another NFL team." The Eagles certainly appear poised to turn the page and move on as opposed to re-signing him later in the offseason. Westbrook can still play effectively with a limited workload, but he's also the biggest injury risk in the league. LT is a better option than Westy. Westy will make a good 3rd down guy or something more like Bush. He has proven he can't carry the load. Who knows he might retire after the concussions?

Free-agent RB Brian Westbrook is going to St. Louis on Saturday for a visit and a physical with the Rams, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Westbrook missed eight games last season because of concussions, but he has been through vigorous testing and is eager to continue his career. The Packers also have been in contact with him, according to sources, and remain a distinct possibility.

Both the Rams and Packers have staffs well versed in the West Coast system run by the Eagles, in which Westbrook was a dynamic force in the passing game. He would be brought in to compliment the feature back in either locale, and he also would bring strong leadership and experience to the locker room.
