The end of his time in Oakland? Certainly looks that way with the Campbell trade and now this...

The Raiders are "preparing the process" of releasing JaMarcus Russell, according to ESPN's John Clayton.

NFL Network's Michael Lombardi was all over this story as soon as the Jason Campbell trade went down. Despite coach Tom Cable's protestations to the contrary, the Raiders were simply not going to risk an injury that would guarantee Russell $6.45 million more than he's already stolen. Al Davis' hand-picked No. 1 overall pick in 2007 will likely be axed before this weekend's minicamp, and he may struggle to find a second opportunity elsewhere.

It Official:

The Oakland Raiders released former No. 1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell on Thursday, ending a three-year tenure marked by his high salary and unproductive play on the field.

The decision came less than two weeks after Oakland acquired Jason Campbell from Washington to take over at quarterback and signifies that owner Al Davis finally lost patience with the immensely talented but unproductive player he drafted first overall in 2007 against the wishes of former coach Lane Kiffin.

The Oakland Raiders confirmed Thursday that they have filed a grievance seeking to recoup money from former quarterback JaMarcus Russell.

A source with knowledge of the situation told NFL Network insider Jason La Canfora the team wants roughly $9.5 million.
