We have a young man who is in the Marine Corps and has been part of our league for a number of years. This is the first year he has had difficulty getting draft picks in (he drafted via video phone from Iraq a few years ago) and he has asked me to help him out a little as he is in the middle of another deployment.
Here is our league scoring system: Passing - 1 Pt per PaTD, 1 Pt per 75 PaYds, .5 Pt per 2 Pt Conversion, -1 Pt per INT, -1 Pt per FL Rushing - 1 Pt per RuTd, 1 Pt per 33 RuYds, .5 Pt per 2 Pt Conversion, -1 Pt per FL Receiving - 1 Pt per ReTd, 1 Pt per 33 ReYds, .5 Pt per 2 Pt Conversion, -1 Pt per FL IDP Defense - 1 pt per sack (.5 for .5 sack), 1 pt per INT, 1 pt per TD, 1 pt per FF, 1 pt per 3 tackles, .5 pt per 3 assisted tackles
It is a 12 team keeper (up to 20 per year) and we start 2 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, 2 DL, 2 LB, 2 DB. Roster max is 30 players. If you keep fewer than 20, you are compensated with draft picks (so if you keep 6 - you start drafting in round 7). Available players are any NFL rookies and whatever was dropped.
A note - the league is a little QB crazy, so even a bad QB is worth having at this point.
Here is his roster: QB - Kyle Orton, Jake Delhomme RB - Joseph Addai WR - Mike Sims-Walker, Roddy White, Braylon Edwards, DeMaryius Thomas TE - Zach Miller K - DL - LB - Demeco Ryans, DJ Williams, London Fletcher DB -
His first three picks were: Round 9 - Jake Delhomme, QB Round 10 - Braylon Edwards, WR Round 11 - DeMaryius Thomas
I'm trying to help him out with some suggestions for picks, so I was wondering if anyone here could throw out suggestions for sleepers or ideas for his roster. We're now in round 12 (so try to think that about 130 players are off the board) and he has a pick coming up.
Best available at each position: QB - Trent Edwards, Charlie Whitehurst, Derek Anderson, Seneca Wallace, Tim Tebow, Jimmy Claussen RB - Ricky Williams, Ladanian Tomlinson, Thomas Jones, Chester Taylor, Tim Hightower, Laurence Maroney, Earnest Graham, Kevin Smith WR - Derrick Mason, Donnie Avery, Antonio Bryant, Nate Burleson, Chris Chambers, Terrell Owens, Devin Hester, Dexter McCluster, Kevin Walter, Justin Gage
We're about 20 picks into the draft total, so most of the bigger name rookies are gone - still see Hardesty and Tate available. I don't pick for a while, so I'm just trying to give him a hand. Any suggestions?
I really like Antonio Bryant this year in Cincinnati... He would be my choice out of those guys and would be the #3 WR on your roster...
The fact that there's only one RB on the roster, however, changes things... If the Tate that's still available is Ben Tate then I take him... If not, I'd take Williams since you really need RB help now and he will definitely contribute this year...
Golden Tate is a nice sleeper, as is Dexter McCluster for KC. I think his best pick for talent on the board right now is Thomas Jones for KC. I read today that Jamaal Charles did have off-season shoulder surgery and was on the sidelines at Chiefs recent OTS's.
T. Jones may be a bit old, but there's not much wear on his tires. From what is available it is hard to argue against a guy coming off a 1,400+ yard season, and who is in line for red-zone carries.
I ike Ricky Willaims too, with Ronnie Brown coming off the Lisfranc injury and Miami not spending a high pick on a young RB.
He needs to fill out his RB's and first on my list is Maroney. Your scoring is bizarre I have to say. Jones and LT just own't be much of a factor this year imo. Charles in KC is legit. And really, scoring at 1 point per td you need yardage guys.
I know IDP is really hard to predict year to year but looking at your scoring a good IDP can outscore a RB or WR in any given week easily. YOu may want to steer him that way if most of the top IDP are off the board then I would have no issues grabbing a big name IDP this early.
I ended up grabbing Ricky Williams and Laurence Maroney for him, looking at David Harris with the next pick if he is available. IDP's (LB especially) can be very good scorers, but LB is also a very plentiful position (difference between the top guys and the guy 20 spots down is not much at all). Our scoring may seem weird, but it produces scores that actually resemble NFL scores (our Super Bowl score was 31-27 for instance). We have a really stable group of 12 good owners, and the scoring is 11 years worth of collaboration. Thanks again for the help guys!
