The Fifth Pick In 2010 ...

Postby daullaz » Sun Jun 27, 2010 7:40 pm

It seems pretty clear that Adrian Peterson, Chris Johnson, Ray Rice, and Maurice Jones-Drew will go 1-4 in some order in 2010. Whoever in your league picks fifth then has a decision to make. If that person is you, what are you going to do?

I'm thinking about taking Andre Johnson. I kind of like who's available at RB in the second round (especially if I can nab Mathews), and A.J. is pretty much a sure thing.

I'm going to move this over to DTKW daullaz. More of a topic for that forum.

I would have no issue with someone taking AJ at 1.05. Likely won't be me as I would take Gore, Turner and SJax over him easily in a non PPR league. AJ at 1.08 to 1.12 is more to my liking.

I'm with you. I am taking the proven stud RBs up until the end of the round. I like the RBs available in the second round too, but I also like the Roddy Whites, Brandon Marshalls etc. that are available in the middle of the second round. If you can get a typical season from any of the three you mentioned, and get a sure stud WR in the second round, I would value that more than a WR who is probably going to get about 1500/12 and a RB who hasn't yet proven that he can carry a FF team to a championship with the second round pick. But that is just my philosophy. In non-PPR, it gives you the flexibility of getting a possible Greene/DWilliams type of guy to have a monster rushing attack, or having a very studly RB/WR to start the draft out with, which opens up the door to various possibilities in the coming rounds which are much less certain in format than the first two will be.

In a PPR league, going with AJ there has its benefits. But so does drafting either SJax or Gore, two RBs with monster PPR possibilites. Going AJ/White with those first two picks would be a very nice start to the draft, but then you HAVE to play catch up at RB.

I would take Gore or Turner. I don't think I would take AJ until about 7-8. Gore, Turner, and S Jax are the last RB's who get the lions share of the carries and I feel it is very important to grab one if you can.

I would take Gore at #5, and not just because I am a Niner fan :-b .

I just think the Niners are going to pound the football all year and Gore is going to be the workhorse. They drafted 2 big strog offensive lineman that should start from day 1. Also, the emergance of Vernon Davis and Crabtree is going to keep defenses from stacking 8 in the box. I expect a monster year from Gore. He also won't be in a RBBC which is pretty rare these days.

if it isnt ppr, id go Turner at #5, but wouldnt have a problem with Ajohnson, Gore, or SJax. personally i have SJax lower than the others just because he never scores. I agree that there will be a good Rb there in round 2, so i think its a very good strategy, because in round 2 the Wrs available will be Roddy White, Sydney Rice, etc- good, but a big dropoff from AJ.

i dont really agree with moving this to DTKW...i think this particular thread deserves a lengthy discussion and is likely to be discussed quite a bit between now and draft day...we all know that wont happen in DTKW...i see it similar to the "who is the #1 Dynasty pick" string of threads we had

that said i havent given much thought as to who i'd draft at #5...right now my feeling is it's probably the worst pick in the draft. i dont really have a ton of confidence in any of the Tier 2 backs like Gore, Turner, etc but i'm not sure i fell very comfortable taking a WR or QB that high either

most likely i'd roll the dice with Gore though

I agree. I actually think we should take it a step further and do similar to what we did with the rookies. Start with the first pick and have a poll for each of the 12 picks in round 1.

If it's non-PPR I like:
5. Gore
6. Turner
7. AJ
8. SJax

if it's PPR I like:
5. Gore
6. AJ
7. SJax
8. Turner

Personally, I like Gore after the "Big 4" in virtually all scoring formats. That being said, AJ is not a "reach" after the first 4 RBs are taken if you don't have faith in the 2nd tier of RBs I listed above.

I hate the middle round picks. Never any RB good enough to seperate from others, and feel there are too many question marks at RB this year to take AJ this early. Would likely take Gore. I think the Niners may actually be improving, and Smith may have had enough time to become at least a mediocre QB. Gore should rock if San Fran gets on a roll.
