Am I screwed? Auction draft gone wrong. WHIR

Postby Metsown » Wed Aug 11, 2010 3:59 am

We just finished our live auction draft a second ago. 2 things: I came in preparing for a 2 QB league, changed it to 1 QB day of. We did a 250 dollar bank roll, instead of the standard 200. I guess it threw some people off price wise, including me. WR's went sort of cheap in the middle of the draft(Fitz 45, Wayne 41, Austin 39, others got pretty crazy...Andre Johnson 65, Randy Moss 54, Marshall 48) and I waited thinking I could get 2 of Jennings, Roddy White, Colston, Steve Smith, Steve Smith, etc. I screwed up...both Smiths went semi cheap for 32 dollars a peice, I should've bid hard on the Carolina Smith. White proceeded to go for 52 dollars, Jennings 48, and Colston 47. I didn't get any of them. Ended up having to pay 28 dollars for Dwayne freaking Bowe...

12 team, PPR league on ESPN. Mostly standard stats.
Anyway, here's my team($250):
QB Tony Romo $26
RB Ryan Matthews $37
RB Shonn Greene $33
RB/WR Pierre Thomas $35
WR Dwayne Bowe $28
WR Hakeem Nicks $16
TE Kellen Winslow $5
D/ST Saints $1
K Neil Rackers $1
BN Jahvid Best $36(had to get him and overpay, my only shot at a viable WR is trading one of my RB and slotting in Best, who I'm fine with starting)
BN Jay Cutler $7
BN Derrick Mason $7
BN Santonio Holmes $5
BN Michael Bush $5
BN Malcom Floyd $4
BN Jabarr Gaffney $4

Obviously, my team isn't looking great. I will say though, there are quite a few teams in similar situations as me...it seems like most people screwed themselves by either overpaying early(Chris Johnson went for 84, Ray Rice 81, Adrian Peterson 78, MJD 78, Steven Jackson 62, Brees 51, Brady 50, Manning 45), or waiting too long and being forced to overpay for mediocre talent.

What should I do? Try to package a RB and WR for an upgrade at WR? I may be fine with starting Bowe at WR2 I guess, I like him this year.

Thoughts? WHIR ;-D

Tough break on the WRs. I think your idea regarding Best is a good one (I am guessing that you would then try to move Thomas or Greene for a WR). By any chance did any of the owners that paid big bucks for the guys at the top of the RB class have to settle for a less than optimal RB2? If so, I would target one of them to see if they would be willing to deal since they are probably concerned about their RB situation.

Touch break on the WR's, but yes, I think your best bet is to trade one of your RB's for another WR. There is bound to be some team who is stacked at WR and weak at RB. Then again, Mason and Holmes have the potential to provide good return for you if they play well.

The problem is, people are idiots and if they have never heard of Ryan Mathews then they assume he must suck. I can't get proper value for any of my RB (I think proper value would be any top 15 wr), so I'm almost ready to just wait for the season to start and see who comes crawling for a RB after they see how well my guys perform. I personally like the upsides of Bowe and Nicks, I just would feel a lot more comfortable with a legit WR1 instead of having an RB2 on my bench.
