Pick 4 of 12 in a PPR re-draft league...too much risk?

Postby YoungPhoenix » Wed Aug 11, 2010 8:52 am

I had my first draft of 2010 last night for a PPR re-draft league. I drew the 4th overall pick and here is the team I ended up with:

QB: Kevin Kolb, Matthew Stafford
RB: Maurice Jones-Drew, Jahvid Best, Felix Jones, Michael Bush, Rashad Jennings
WR: Reggie Wayne, Calvin Johnson, Malcolm Floyd, Johnny Knox, Jacoby Jones, Donnie Avery
TE: Brent Celek
DEF: New Orleans Saints
K: Neil Rackers

As the draft started, the RB and QB position was hit hard in the first four rounds by the other owners. This was good for me in that I came away with Wayne and Johnson at the WR position (and was one pick away from landing Roddy White in the 4th round!), but I also had to assume more risk than I would have liked with my QBs and RBs since the other owners had already picked these positions over by the time I addressed them. While I have quite a few guys with upsides, they are not proven. Plus I seem to have invested heavily in the Lions offense which is kind of scary to think about. So what do you think (as always WHIR)?

I wonder who went ahead of MJD, Ray Rice?

Certainly a solid club. A lot of it hinges on the play of Kevin Kolb, but I love Celek at TE and I'm heavily drinking the Johnny Knox kool-aid right now. The fact that Barber is splitting touches evenly with Felix Jones at this point concerns me a little, but he is a decent #3. I also like Jahvid Best to outperform his ADP.

Overall it's a team with a lot of upside and potential which you already know, and yes theres some risky picks but I think it should still be competitive.

The top 3 ended up going Johnson, Rice, and then Peterson. If I could go back and change one thing that I did, I would have held off on grabbing Best until the fifth round (I grabbed him in the fourth round since RBs were flying off the board and I was feeling a little panicked). Most likely I could have still picked him up in the 5th round and I could have drafted Rivers in the 4th as my starting QB.

Pretty crazy to grab Megatron and Reggie Wayne in Rounds 2-3. In my 12 teamer, both were gone by the about the 4th pick in the 2nd round (so maybe 16 picks into the draft).

I like your team, but I'm a little concerned about the RBs after MJD. You'll have to hope that Best, Bush, and Jones work out. If one is a clear-cut starter (Best?) and the other one is startable (Bush), you'll be fine. But if 2 out of those 3 don't pan out, it might be rough.

QB: 7.5 (kolb has an upside in a passing offense but stafford as backup can be scary. If kolb can start strong u could be in good shape here tho)
RB: 7.5 (MJD is awesome but after that things get ugly. Im assuming u start 2 RBs like most leagues. in which case u dont have a solid #2 RB. felix is in a 3 back system and best is a rookie. if MJD goes down, ur in a terrible position)
WR: 9.5 (hard to just here without knowing how many WRs u start but if its 2 then ur in great shape. wayne and johnson are gonna be great for u. vincent jacksons hold out should help malcolm (i hope, i got him too haha) and u got good depth here. definitely ur strongest position)

overall 8 (kolb playing well and MJD staying healthy will determine ur success. if both can happen then you should be in great shape. im just worried if kolb sucks or gets hurt, then ur basically starting the Lions offense, which is a scary thing. im also not a fan of having QB/RB or WR/RB from the same team, and u got all 3.)

Great Draft! I would look for a better back up to Kolb though. Kolb has great value but is a risk, I would make sure that is covered.
