3rd pick strategy

Postby cpmcda01 » Sat Aug 21, 2010 12:12 am

I have the 3rd pick in my draft next weekend. Here is the important info regarding scoring:

6pt for all TDs
1pt / 25 yd passing
1pt / 10 yd rushing and receiving
-2pt for INT and fumbles

Special scoring for TE: 1pt per reception (We might change this to 0.5 points - this is making the top TE's score right with the top RBs, which seems lop-sided. Still, at 0.5 points per catch, the elite TE's are right along side the elite WRs in terms of total fantasy points using 2009 stats). We are trying this because TEs were insignificant in our league last year and we're trying to make it more interesting.

We start:
1 QB
2 RB
2 WR
1 TE
1 K
1 DST
** Only 4 bench spots!!!

Now, the fact that QB's get 6 pts/TD makes them a little more valuable in our league. We'll see maybe 2 QBs go in the 1st round and 2 or 3 more in the 2nd. TE this year will be sort of like the QB position, with high point potential, but only 1 starting spot.

My strategy right now is to grab MJD 1st, then see if there is a run on QB/WE/TE in the 2nd. If the run is on QBs and Romo falls to me, I take him at the end of the 2nd and try to get an elite WR early in the 3rd. After that, I may grab a high upside TE, but ultimately my strategy this year revolves around stockpiling RBs in the middle rounds. I'm not sure when I will target my WR2, but I'll just have to watch my tiers. With only 4 bench spots, depth is an issue for everyone, and there are always viable options on the WW.

Of course, I'll have to adapt this based on what happens. Sometimes I like to go against the grain, so if there is a run on QB and the guy I'm targeting is already gone, I'll buck the trend and grab the best WR.

You answered your own question here. I am a believer in BAP (best available player) in the first 5 rounds of any draft. I used to have a plan for every spot as to when I was taking a position... and it got me in trouble as I reached for guys and didn't maximize value.

Remember, ALL QBs score 6 points per TD.... don't reach for one.

Good luck!

I agree, you have the right mindset.
The key to a winning season is focusing on one opponent at a time. Winning one week at a time. Never look back and never look ahead.

I am now starting to doubt whether I should take MJD with the 3rd pick. The mystery surrounding his absence and lack of information about the knee is bothering me. Not to mention, the Jax offense was ho-hum last year without any improvements this off-season.

Why is Turner not getting more love? Atlanta's o-line looks really good and their schedule is soft. The same is true for Frank Gore.

Maybe I am just getting nervous and over-thinking this, as I have historically been in the back half of the draft order.
