I definitely WHIR! My draft is on Wed and I need some advice!
Hey everyone,
I was 2006 and 2008 Super Bowl winner with my keeper league, but my team has drastically changed since then. Those winning teams were based on Westbrook and Romo throwing TDs to T.O. None of them are on my team now. I have a good core team on paper, but what I'm lacking is an ELITE player to break out and score 25-30 pts one day and bury my opponent.
We are a really unorthodox keeper league in that we have 10 teams and we keep 5 veteran players, and we draft 5 rookies each year and keep 2 for the following year so long as we don't start them at all during the season. So basically, round 1 in our draft is like round 6 or 7 in a normal re-draft. I have the following keepers coming into the draft:
Gore Pierre Thomas LeSaun McCoy DeSean Jackson Roddy White Johny Knox Brent Celek
Like I said, good on paper, but they gave me a 5-8 record last year! Jackson lacked consistency, PT had to fight Bell, etc. The wheels fell off of Westbrook and T.O., etc. The bottom line is nobody on my roster is EXPLOSIVE like a Chris Johnson type of player.
So I posted on my league board and said I want to make a big trade. Any singular player on my roster plus a 1st round pick swap (I pick 3rd) for an ELITE player. My draft is Wed. Night so I need to make a quick decision on the trade offer below:
I give up: Roddy White & Lesaun McCoy I get:Maurice Jones-Drew & the 9th. overall pick.
Thoughts on this trade?
I hate to give up White but MJD has only scored LESS THAN 12 TDs once in the past 4 seasons. That's the kind of boost my team needs. I'm not confident that McCoy is the next Westbrook either. He's yet to prove himself and he lost red zone carries to Weaver last year, and now Mike Bell is there.
Some other food for thought, At the 3rd pick I could probably have a shot at Schaub (4 pts behind Manning), Romo, Kolb (I'm really high on his potential right now) or Cutler (Mike Martz made Kitna a 4,000 yd passer even). It's looking like Schaub and Romo could be gone by 3 though.
Outside of QBs I only see No 3 RBs like Barber (with F. Jones as a thorn in his side), Bradshaw or Jacobs, and Forte (will he bounce back?)being worth the pick.
The thing that sucks is there really isn't much depth this year at all for WRs. As mentioned because of the number of players kept the following are the best avail WRs ranked by last years scoring:
Mason Meechem Sims- Walker TO Collie Cotchery Housh Santana Moss Chambers Evans Garcon Roy Williams Burleson Hester Crayton Breaston Avery Malcom Floyd
I will definitely HAVE to take a WR in the 1st round if I make the trade, but I'm almost more included to skip the vets on the decline and underachievers like Mason, Santana Moss, Housh, Lee Evans, T.O. etc and take a risk on breakout potential guys like Breaston, Avery, Floyd, Aromashodu, Kevin Walter, Jacoby Jones, James Jones, etc. who are young and on the upswing and have the potential to break out this season.
So what do you guys think? Am I giving too much up and making myself too weak at WR or is this worth it?
Thats a tough one. First, I'll say you shouldn't feel forced to make a move. Last year Gore missed a few games, mccoy wasn't the #1 guy, and johnny knox was just a rookie. Those guys should be better this year.
On paper, that trade is more value for you, but it gives up a very good WR without much room to replace him. And it also leaves you with pierre thomas and mccoy sitting on your bench, which isn't the best situation. try to talk to some other in the league and see if anyone is interested in either of those guys for a WR. or maybe a package of one of them plus knox for a receiver. You could even try trading em both and grabbing forte if you are comfortable with that.
For the WR pool, I'm not sure what I'd do. Maybe go high upside like collie of floyd
i like the trade for you. MJD is a beast, plus you get a first rd pick in your draft. White is very solid, but I don't love McCoy. MJD > White + McCoy in my book.
see if he might trade out white for desean.... some people love desean... I love roddy. either way it will be a solid trade. You could try Desean and Mccoy for MJD and his early 2nd its only a few picks further and makes your team sooo much better... thanks for help with mine
This is a tough one, but I still think I make the trade. MJD is a STUD and a huge upgrade over McCoy IMO. Yes, you're giving up White, but I think you should be able to make up the difference that you lost in White by getting MJD
Make the move and don''t look back. RBs are harder to find than WRs and although there is not much WR depth in your draft pool there always seems to be quality breakout WRs like Austin, Harvin and Sims-Walker last year that come out of nowhere. Just keep your ear close to the ground at the beginning of the year. RBs are harder to come by and seemingly less apt to break out since depth charts don't change as much and people are usually handcuffing their backups.
Do it. MJD is MJD. He's pretty good. Get a QB with the 3rd pick (Schaub, Romo then Kolb) and then try to get Meachem, Malcolm Floyd or Sims-Walker with the 9th pick. I think that would work out pretty well for you.
