HELP!!! QB Conundrum

Postby BlakeAF » Fri Aug 27, 2010 8:10 am

So i'm a newbie. I started my picks up to benched players in a pretty standard method, but then once I hit my backups I went a little nuts. I need some advice.

My roster:
QB - Jay Cutler
WR - Larry Fitzgerald
WR - Steve Smith
RB - Frank Gore
RB - Shonn Greene
TE - Jermichael Finley
W/R - Knowshon Moreno
K - Mason Crosby
DEF - NYG

Now I am a bit uncomfortable with Cutler. I feel good about most of the other spots. I decided to take Ben Roethlisberger as a backup QB for later in the season. I did this because I saw most QB's gobbled up and one of our league's strongest grabbed Ben's replacement so I thought I could either leverage Ben for a great trade or use it against him later in the season. Due to still be uncomfortable with Cutler and there being another pretty solid QB remaining and me being from Atlanta I grabbed up Matt Ryan as well. I figured I could use Ryan/Cutler based on performance then leverage either and/or Ben in a trade later or play Ben to come on strong later in the season if he does well. I picked up Dexter McCluster as a backup W/R, and Devin Hester as a backup WR.

My bench is:
QB - Matt Ryan
QB - Ben Roethlisberger
W/R - Dexter McCluster
WR - Devin Hester

I noticed that everyone else in the league picked up 2 more WR/RB where I grabbed up 2 QB's for later trades/use. Was this a stupid thing to do? I just don't see any other RB/WR outside of my lineup that look worth giving up the Cutler/Ryan options and Ben later in the season. If Ryan or Cutler perform horribly I will drop them for a RB/WR that steps up and does well, but I just don't know. I am a newbie and it seems like what I did was bass ackwards.

Not really stupid. Last year I took Manning in the second then Schaub in the 7th simply to use one of them as trade bait halfway through the year, luckily i found the right manager and ended up getting Michael Turner with Schaub as the centerpiece of the deal. I finished 2nd that year. Im one of those who likes Cutler this year. The guy has the talent, hes shown that. His head just has to catch up with his arm. You definately should be able to deal one those qbs mid season cause inevitably someone will go down or underperfom. You need to hope none of your starters gets any serious injuries though, cause thats where your lack of depth could kill you. Your qb splurge is risky but it might pay off.

no, pickung up those Qbs wasnt a good idea. You really only need Jay Cutler and can probably pick up a decent QB on a waiver later on for your bye week.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to wait until week 1 and see what RB's perform well? I am pretty sure I will drop Ryan for a RB if there is a good option, but if there simply isn't a great option wouldn't it be wise to leverage him for a trade with one of the numerous guys in my league who has 5-6 RB's?

Any suggestions on sleeper RB's that I should keep an eye on?

Also how do waivers work? If I add a player and drop another is it just for a week or is it permanent or?

adding and dropping on waivers is permanent. So if you drop a player, hes fair game for other teams to pick up.
As for sleepers, i'd keep an eye on Arian Foster(if no one picked him up) and Michael Bush of the raiders. And here is a link to an article i found on some potential sleepers.

Thanks for the tips. My league is stacked with RB's so there aren't many options. I just hoping Ben's suspension is dropped to 4 games so the guy that took Pit's replacement will have to trade me a star RB for one of my QB's.

Well you're not too bad off at RB....I just hope for you that neither gore or greene have an injury. I would definitely try to trade for atleast some sort of RB depth....you're pretty shallow.
