Backup QB

Postby B3N1ZJAM1N » Sat Sep 04, 2010 1:24 am

Should I drop Matt Cassel for...I'm thinking Alex Smith? My starting QB is Schaub who has a 7 week bye and Cassel plays detroit on week 7...so I'm wondering if I should keep Cassel for that week or not. Is Smith better than Cassel? The top 10 or so on the WW are..orton,campbell,hasselbeck,smith,stafford,freeman,fitzpatrick,quinn,delhomme,moore. Anyone better? I thought stafford but he has the same bye week as Schaub

I really like Alex Smith this year because he has a very favorable schedule. You might want to consider going without a qb until you need one since it is very unlikely that you would play your back up over Schaub. Josh Freeman might be worth a consideration because he plays the Rams week 7. He was quite good last year as rookie without a good receiver. He now has Mike Williams and could possibly surprise a lot of people.

i think you should pick up stafford anyway even though schaub and him have the same bye weeks because schaub is not exactly the most durable qb throughout 16 games

i think orton is a better qb2 than cassell but cassell probably has the better week 7 matchup (cassell vs. det , orton vs. oak)
alex smith probably makes kyle orton look like peyton manning when it comes to dink-and-dunk passing

if you can make room for stafford, do it

Orton, without question. I NEVER base my backup QB on a bye week matchup for my starter. And speaking of starter you own a stud but with his history, you better be getting a backup who, in all honesty, can easily end up a top 10 QB this year.....Orton.

Orton plays OAK in week 7 and OAK pass D has looked good in the past, Orton did have almost 450 yds and 2 scores v.s. them last year. Do not worry about not having Marshall, Denver will be spreading the rock so much, I would not be suprised at 30-40 attempts each and every game.

I am not a huge fan of using bye weeks to make decisions. You need depth because any player can be hurt at any time and you need to be able to protect your starting QB position. I am not big on Cassell and never have been; so I think you are the right track to drop him. I actually have Stafford and Smith higher than Orton. I like SF's schedule and Stafford could break out with all of the new additions and a poor defense. You always have the option of...."if" Stafford breaks out; you end up with the option of a trade for another QB that can satisfy the bye week that is 2 months out and still maintain QB depth.
