I Need YOUR Help!

Postby abrunn11 » Sun Sep 05, 2010 10:21 am

I am in a quandry. We have a (2) round rookie draft before our auction draft every year. I have the first overall pick. First, a brief overview of the league;

$260 auction Cap
Keep as many players as you want, player's salary increase $7 every year
12 team league, start (2) QB's, (2) RB, (2) WR, (1) Flex, (1) K, (1) DEF
Last year 11 of the top 12 scorers were QB's
20 QB's are being kept this year

Now, my quandry;
At first blush you would think that the easy pick would be Mathews, no questions asked. If you look a little deeper, you will find that you can make a strong arguement for Bradford.

Mathews Pro's:
Will most likely be the top scoring rookie this season, and probably a top 10 RB overall.

Mathew's Cons: NFL RB's are not know for their longevity. Here are my RB rookie ranking list of the past few seasons;

2006: Bush, Maroney, DeAngelo, Addai, LenDale, MJD

2007: Peterson, Lynch, Kolby Smith, Garrett Wolfe, Brandon Jackson, Tony Hunt

2008: McFadden, Stewart, Felix, Mendenhall, C. Johnson, Forte, Slaton, Rice

As you can see, Peterson would be the only guy that would still be kept. Bush and McFadden would have both been huge busts.

Bradford Pros: He is a QB in a QB heavy league. There is a great chance that he will be a starter for the next 10 years.

My QB list:

2006: Young, Leinhart, Cutler,
2007: Russell, Quinn, Kolb
2008: Ryan, Flacco, Henne

Of this list, Young, Cutler, Kolb, Ryan, Flacco and Henne are all still keepers.

Bradford Cons:
He is not coming into a great situation and has no receivers to throw to. He has not been durable.

If you were me, who would you take first overall?

You should list your starting roster so people can get a better idea of what your team is in need of. That said, and with no info on your team, I would draft Matthews.

Matthews....no questions....Bradford may be the 30th best QB as far as fantasy-wise beating out Derek Anderson and Josh Freeman only in my book...and maybe Trent Edwards as well..if there are 28ish better QBs ahead of him and Matthews is a clear top-15 RB....go with Matthews

You say the draft is before the auction and keeping a player costs 7 dollars more. How much does a drafted rookie cost when calculating for next year?

How many QBs are gonna be kept this year? RBs? Related to the "what's your roster" question, are you trying to compete this year, or building for the future?

Well, that helps put things in perspective- all the good QBs are gonna be gone.

What's your current roster look like- I'd hate to advise not to draft a RB, but that may be the best, especially with Turner and MJD available. Barber, too. SJax is there, if you're desperate.

Hmm, the more I see the RBs available, the more it seems going QB might make sense.

Given how many QBs are getting kept, how many RBs arent and how much money you have in your cap, I don't think it's ludicrous to take Bradford over Mathews. I don't know if I'd have the stones for that, though, since I love me some RBs. But, if you take out their position and just examine their long-term prospects, seems like it could make sense. AJ Smith seems to like he wants to tear apart the Chargers (letting go of VJax and Turner too early, holding on to LT and Merriman too long), and their o-line is crumbling. Bradford has the foundations for a strong o-line, and has SJax behind him. I see StL's flaws more likely to be fixed than SD's, who seem to just keep getting worse. Then suddenly, Norv Turner'll get scapegoated (not his fault if he doesn't have good players) and the offense will be in ruins with his dismissal.

If my prediciment could be solved by taking the more talented player in the best situation, then I could easily take Mathews. However, when you add the position scarcity of a (2) QB league and the amount of QB's being kept, then it really thoows a wrench into things. Here are my rookie rankings. The first number is a "Talent" ranking, second is "opportunity", Third is "Situation", Fourth is "Position Multiplier" and the last number is "overall score". Our league does not start TE, that is why their position multiplier is so low.

RB Ryan Mathews, SD 10 10 6 0.9 23.4
WR Dez Bryant, DAL 10 10 9 0.8 23.2
QB Sam Bradford, STL 8 10 2 1 20
WR Mike Williams, TB 9 10 5 0.8 19.2
QB Max Hall, ARI 6 6 7 1 19
RB C.J. Spiller, BUF 9 6 5 0.9 18
RB Anthony Dixon, SF 7 7 5 0.9 17.1
RB Jahvid Best, DET 8 7 3 0.9 16.2
RB Toby Gerhart, MIN 6 5 7 0.9 16.2
RB Deji Karim, JAX 8 4 6 0.9 16.2
RB Jonathan Dwyer, PIT 7 3 8 0.9 16.2
RB James Starks, GB 7 5 5 0.9 15.3

Take Mathews and pick up D anderson as your second QB. I think most people will overlook him because of the last two seasons in Cleveland. I like his situation in AZ and I think he may surprise a few this season
