Waiver Wire Hawk Q's, WHIR

Postby cardinalram » Mon Sep 06, 2010 10:35 am

I guess this question pertains to both my leagues - I'll start with my Yahoo 12-man league, pretty much standard scoring.

Here's my draft:

1. (11) Ryan Mathews RB
2. (14) Steven Jackson RB
3. (35) Eli Manning QB
4. (38) Steve Smith WR
5. (59) Jason Witten TE
6. (62) Mike Sims-Walker WR
7. (83) Clinton Portis RB
8. (86) Mike Wallace WR
9. (107) Carnell Williams RB
10. (110) Carson Palmer QB
11. (131) Steve Breaston WR
12. (134) David Akers K
13. (155) Tennessee DEF
14. (158) Dustin Keller TE
15. (179) Toby Gerhart RB

...now on another thread, I was already told that I should pick up a good WR when he breaks out on waivers. However, my question is this - how do I know when that time is? I currently have the #1 waiver (yes, unlucky enough to draft 11th), but I don't want to waste it.

My other team is in a Yahoo 10-man league, also pretty much standard scoring.

My draft for that one was:

1. (8) Andre Johnson WR
2. (13) DeAngelo Williams RB
3. (28) Jamaal Charles RB
4. (33) Marques Colston WR
5. (48) Jermichael Finley TE
6. (53) Mike Sims-Walker WR
7. (68) Eli Manning QB
8. (73) Green Bay DEF
9. (88) Clinton Portis RB
10. (93) Matt Ryan QB
11. (108) Jabar Gaffney WR
12. (113) Carnell Williams RB
13. (128) Heath Miller TE
14. (133) Bernard Berrian WR
15. (148) Neil Rackers K

This one just drafted yesterday, so I still have the #3 waiver, but hopefully that moves up to 2 or 1. On this team, I think I'm in need of more running back power - what do you think? I had DeAngelo last year, and he was a heart-breaker. If not RB's, is there something else I need? I think I have a very strong WR core, maybe I could make a trade or something.

Thanks for the help, I'll try to give back this season!

I really like your draft for the 12 team roster, and if you were gonna drop anyone from that roster it would be toby gerhart for someone else, idk who is on ur WW..

the 10 team league roster i wouldnt waste the ww on anyone, you dont need to drop or pick anyone up.. if anything i would trade deangelo williams, i dont like him this year, with jonathon stewart stealing carries and catches.. im sure you could trade him for someone better that gets most of the carries.

Please help with mine

There are always people that pop up and break out in the first few weeks. I would wait to see what happens before grabbing some PoS off the wire.

How to know when the right time is to burn a waiver claim isn't a science, it's an art - so my answer to that is you have to listen to your gut.

Either you have some serious man-love for Eli, or there was a huge run on QB's in your 12 team league, because 3rd round is awfully early for that pick. My bet is that you could've gotten a higher quality WR at 3 and Eli still would've been there in the 5th, but no matter. W/R/T waivers, the first thing to do is look at your roster and know who your expendable players are at all times. That's usually backup TE's, RB's you'd never start unless there was an injury to consider, and your lowest rated WR. After that, your waiver decisions are generally based on answering two questions: (1) do I have a need for something now? (2) is the guy I want to claim a better long term value than the guy I'm going to drop?

If you have a need now, then sometimes it's better to fill the need with a trade. The nice thing about having the first claim in the waiver order is that you can sit on it. Sometimes another owner will be forced into dropping a player because of an injury to another one, and you can pounce there. With 15 roster spots, that's not quite as likely to happen, but still could. Patience is a virtue with that; it could be 4 or 5 weeks before that happens. The other time to move quickly is when an injury allows a backup that no one owns to move into a feature role. For example, if Cadillac went down with an injury, Kareem Huggins becomes Grade A waiver fodder. Unless that happens though, he's just another guy waiting for a chance. By the way, I'd have used that last draft choice on Huggins instead of Gerhart in that league, since you already own Caddy. Good luck!

I am also going to say and keep that number 1 WW. I don't think you need to do anything with your WRs just yet, and having the number 1 slot is actually pretty huge. Someone will get hurt, someone will break out, something will happen and you will be glad you have that pick.
