loading up on wide outs = good tactic?

Postby radiohead625 » Wed Oct 13, 2010 12:25 am

In my 12 man league there are absolutely no and i mean no running backs on the WW unless you wanna get into tampas mess... so what i figured is ill just load up on quality wide outs in hopes that a few break out and i can trade for running back-back up. Is this a good tactic you think? Our league doesnt seem to fond of trading and that could be the only down fall.

Moved this over to Draft, Trade, Keeper and Waiver questions.

I think whatever you can get of better value than you currently have you take it. I grabbed Lloyd a few weeks ago and it has paid dividends. Now I have the #1 Wr in the league.

I always try and stock up on the best available.

i'm actually dealing with a guy in a similar situation. he's got a ton of great wides but no RB depth.

the issue is similar, with 14 teams in our case, RB depth is difficult to maintain.
i personally don't like the strategy unless you're familiar with the owners in the league and are certain they'll be up for trading.

weigh in on my related situation please

If your league is skittish on trades, I don't like this strategy at all.

In a typical 12 team league, there will always be some WR avail on the wire that had a hot week the prior week, so your gunshy owners who are not likely to trade will be even less likely to trade with you as they think they can just go grab a WR off the wire that lit it up the week before.

As you are seeing, the RB position is always at a premium, so you are still better off reaching down into the depths and putting some RB depth on your bench, even if it does mean you are simply getting LaGarette Blount or someone else who you don't have faith in.

If you just have a roster spot to fill, go grab James Starks in GB and wait a few weeks.

RBs and for this reason only. RBs go down, if an RB of yours goes down and you aren't great on the WW you're going to need to make trades. Top WRs picked off the waiver wire don't have as much value as top RBs off the waiver wire. Look at all these trade talks about "BJax for _____" or "Torain for _____" that _____ was a top 5 pick most likely and a trade that the other owner probably took. You stock up on a few high potential WRs but for the most part go with RBs. I had decent RBs so I didn't go to the WW at all. Last week I traded and got rid of some depth to improve my starters. I'm now wishing I went and grabbed an RB when I had the chance instead of taking a WR off the wire.

I totally agree with this fine commenter.
While other people were getting flavor-of-the-week WRs, I was somehow able to get Torain and Tolbert (despite having 10-11 priority!). Now I'm using this to upgrade at QB (trying anyways).

Thanks. Also wanted to mention by top 5 pick I'm referring to each person's team meaning within the first 5 rounds. Not first 5 picks of the first round so people don't think I'm crazy lol. Congrats to you though, you did what everyone should have. I'm kicking myself because Torain went past waivers and I had the opportunity to grab him off FA. I realize now you never know when you're going to need RBs. No matter what your current team looks like try and grab some high upside RBs off waivers before they blow up and you are left with nothing.

well said jetsfan...I always treat RB as a premium and draft very deep at that position and it pays huge dividends.
