my season's on the line with these next games and i feel like i need one more receiver, runningback, and a better D to be comfortable.
here are some available guys on waivers: donald driver, ryan torain, beanie wells, reggie bush, danny amendola, jacoby ford, mike williams (Sea), clinton portis, ATL defense, ARIZ defense, STL defense, SD defense among others.
which one of those guys (if any) should i pick up given my roster:
QB-Peyton Mannion WR-Desean Jackson WR-Greg Jennings WR-Steve Johnson (still not reliable in my eyes) RB-Peyton Hillis RB-Thomas Jones (last week brings a huge question mark) TE- Jacob Tamme K-Nick Folk DEF-Ravens (been horrible) Bench Mike Vick Jahvid Best Knowshon Moreno Ryan Matthews Hines Ward Zach Miller
I'm sorry to say that I wouldn't exchange any of your players for those FA options. Your team actually looks very good to me (though it's hard to judge exactly without knowing how many teams in your league). Ward, Vick, Best, and Moreno are fantastic bench options. With the health situation of your guys (like Best, Moreno, Vick) improved you should be in good shape. At DEF, maybe there are better streaming options. For example, Tampa Bay this week (though I'm guessing you already started the Ravens). Unless it's a 14-team + league, there always seem to be good DEF matchup options (unless a lot of guys are also streaming DEFs).
I would think a better option to improve your team is through trading. With Manning, you'll never start Vick - I'd imagine there has to be a team with a struggling QB who would love to have Vick. If you don't trust Steve Johnson, sell high on him (though I wouldn't agree with that assessment). Dangle a RB (Best, Moreno, Jones) for an upgrade. You look to have a lot of trade value without hurting your starting lineup. Look at the other teams and send some trade feelers out.
I third the opinions above. You may have just been unlucky. I have seen plenty of GREAT teams still have a losing record, that's fantasy. But, for your Defense, I agree, start streaming for the rest of the year. There is a weekly defensive match-ups thread around here that could help you determine which one to play each week. With the exception of the top 2-3 DEFs each year (NO, PHI, NYJ in 2009)...(PHI, BAL, CHI in 2008)... (ARI, TENN, GB this year)... you're going to find a points advantage to playing match-ups.
Pick a Green match-up each week. This week TB, SEA, PHI, NYG, MIN, and CHI are decent options. Although this formula doesn't include leagues that reward DEF for return yards.
rather than shopping the waiver wire, if I were you, I'd look to deal one of those QB's in a package to get an upgrade at RB or WR.
You've got great depth at these positions but you don't have the truly premiere guys.
There has to be a team in your league who would love to get Vick and one of your RB's in exchange for a top 5 RB or possibly Vick and one of your WR's for a Roddy White.
