Do I start Brees in the Dome or Vick in the snow?

Postby Newkie » Mon Dec 27, 2010 11:39 am

I am down by 5 points in the Championship game and I can either pull Brees out and add Vick or keep him in the comfy confines of a dome and my lineup? I also have Colston going and my Matt Bryant kicking. The other guy has Adrian Peterson and Brent Celek. This is a PPR league with bonus's after 300 yards passing and 100 yards rushing/receiving.
I am thinking of putting Vick in to counter Celek's receptions, and hope that AP doesnt go off. (Which I think he will be limited because of weather and health, and playing from behind) So that leaves Colston as my difference maker? I am still kicking myself after benching Forte for Bradshaw...

Any and all help on this matter would be appreciated.

Thanks and have a happy new year.

I actually think I'd rather have Brees in this spot. You have a solid WR and a good kicker already going in what should be a high-scoring game in the cozy confines of the dome, and with Peterson and Celek only I think you have the advantage of playing it a BIT "safe", though Vick still probably has a bit more upside than Brees. I think the higher potential for injury to Vick, the chances the Eagles could be up 21 at the beginning of the 4th quarter and bench him and that it's in bad weather against a decent pass D and I'd roll with Brees if I was only down 5 in a case like this one.

Don't worry about "cancelling" Celek's receptions (or doubling up on Colston's for that matter), that's a total myth anyway. Remember, each 10-yard catch is worth 2 points for the receiver and less than a half point for the QB, so there's no viability to this theory even if you throw out the fact that you should start your best options at each position regardless of who your opponent is throwing out there...

I agree, Brees would be a good start, but the 6 points taken away from Celek on a TD would keep him from hurting me.

Thanks

You're actually making my point for me (though you think you're on the other side ;-) ): "Cancelling" out the points of the tied-for-fourth-best receiving option on the same team as your would-be QB should not even come close to entering your mind when making a start/sit decision. If Celek catches a TD, then he catches a TD. You can't control that - you can only control starting the guys that will get you the most points (and in a decision like this, it's about how much you want to risk your baseline points for some implied upside). If Colston catches 10 balls for 132 yards and a score, those are all points your opponent can't do anything about either, as well as all of Bryant's extra points and field goals. Fantasy football is all about putting the guys out there you believe will score you the most points in a given week, and the rest is all up to "fate", luck and making the best educated decision(s) you can make with limited, imperfect information, etc...

Not saying Vick is a terrible choice, and he could outscore Brees like I said before, but don't make the (potentially) "right" decision for a reason that doesn't exist, that's all I'm saying ;-D
