Here is my situation:
I have this week to make a trade, or wait until August. I get six keepers. I figure they are Rodgers, CJ2K, MJD, Charles, Jennings, and Fitzgerald.
I also get two keepers with 2 yrs experience or less. Candidates include Wallace, Starks, Danario, Benn and Pettigrew. I'm leaning Wallace and Starks.
I don't think I can keep VJax or Finley over any of the guys in the first six. But I hate to just outright cut them. And so far I'm getting cr@p offers ("how about my 5th rounder for Finley" -- mind you that after six keepers, that equates to round 11).
What if I package VJax and Finley together to the last place team for his first round pick? It's not guaranteed to be the #1 overall, as the last three teams are in a weighted lottery. Statistically, it's likely the #1 overall, but could be #2 or #3.
My thinking is that the other team is so bad, both in record (5-21 playing doubleheaders) and scoring (70 ppg where the league avg is closer to 83; mine was in the mid-90s) that he doesn't exactly become invincible after this deal. His roster as of now includes: Mathews, FJax, Lynch, Torain, DJax, Britt, Branch and Heap. Essentially, a lot of yuck. Plus he's in the other division.
I know on paper it's a big overpay. But given that I'm likely to lose them for nothing, would you do this deal?
