The PPR Debate

Postby LMack » Thu Jul 07, 2011 11:14 pm

I feel like I'm behind the times here. 75% of the leagues I played in last year did not award points per reception.

I know a lot of virtual ink has been spent on this topic already but I'm having trouble finding good discussions about it, even after trying to do some digging on the Cafe. I'm the commish of a couple leagues and I'm looking to switch them over to PPR. I'd like to be able to make a more convincing argument than just saying "I'm the commissioner and I think it's better this way blah" Anyone got some good links?

I remember there was a big debate thread here that basically came to the conclusion while it may not fully reflect actual value of football plays and players (the 0 yard catch conundrum) but it makes the game of fantasy football more balanced. That's something I can get behind.

If I get the go ahead, should I try to ween my leagues on to it by starting with a .5 or using a full 1 right away?

Thanks ;-D

I'd go with 0.5 and never move to a full point. I think the full point systems swing the pendulum too far and value pass catching RB's too highly relative to groud and pound RB's and too high relative to WRs as well.

I agree - start with and end with the .5, it will add enough to balance things out, but not enough where lower tier players are really getting a huge boost. It makes the 0 yard catch a bit easier too O:-)

I went to .5 last year and I really enjoy it. It added something to the games but did not do anything too crazy.

i think it somewhat depends on starting roster size too
i play in a 12 team league that starts 2RB 3WR 1TE and a FLEX so the full PPR makes some borderline guys playable during bye weeks

My league has had 1 PPR for the last 4 years but we've noticed things are skewed way in favor of receivers, so we're moving to .5 PPR to keep it balanced this year.

.5 PPR is the way to go. As everyone has said 1 is far to many points to get for a catch

I think if. 5 points is going to favor anyone then you probably need to take a look at your scoring system. I've been playing PPR for the last 7 years. If you have your scoring system setup right then it's not going to place that much more value to any position.

I LOVE full ppr leagues! I didnt start fantasy till about 5 yrs ago so I've never "truely" understood the bell cow RB/RB style of play that many of the older players often reminisce upon but in my full PPR leagues the possibilites to create your team are limitless. The top RBs are still the top pt earners but the top WRs arent far off. Last year we had and equal 10 rbs and wrs over the 250 pt mark (we also give bonuses and big play pts) which makes the league VERY balanced. Going WR/WR for some is just as solid as going RB/RB for others. Plus the league is no longer a running game any longer and is a pass first league, with all the RBBCs out there the PPR def helps the elite RBs out more than the average but RBs are almost a thing of the past in fantasy. Its all QBs and WRs these days.
