Draft strategy question, when NOT to take a RB

Postby Thor » Sat Aug 13, 2011 12:07 pm

drafting in a 12 team league, no PPR.

What draft position in the first round would you select Rogers or Vick or a STUD WR over a RB?

I think RB is actually pretty deep this year with all of the 2 RB attacks.

here are a couple of RB squads I got in 4 different 12 team draft mocks. I noted who I chose if I didn't take a first round RB.

Mock 1(5th pick)
Rice -5
Hillis -20
Greene - 53
Tomlinson -116
Vereen 173
Ward - 188

Mock 2(3rd Pick)
Charles - 3
Hillis - 22
Lynch - 75
Hightower - 94
Hardesty - 166

Mock 3/ 10th pick ( 1st 3 picks A Johnson, C Johnson, Bowe)
Moreno - 39
Greene - 58
Ingram - 63
Hightower - 82
B Scott - 183

Mock 4 / 6th Pick (Vick)
McFadden - 19
D Williams - 30
F Jackson - 67
Tomlinson - 102
Sproles - 115
Woodhead - 139
14 Team 5 pts per 5 receptions
QB, 2RBs, 3WRs, TE, FLEX(WR/TE), K, DST
QB- Romo, Freeman, Manuel
RB- Sproles, J Bell, Bernard, W McGahee
WR - Megatron, D Bryant, V Brown, A Jeffery, R Randle, P Harvin(IR)
TE- J Graham, Sudfeld
K- Hartley
DST - Dallas

I would say in the last third of the round depending on what RBs are available if people reach for some players very good RBs could be available in the back end of round 1.

I am taking a RB if I pick #1-#6 (Foster, AP, CJ2K, Charles, Rice and McCoy) after that I have no problem taking WR or QB if they are best available. Round 1 has to be a player you are very confident will perform well. Those are the only RB's I am very confident about.

Elite WR anytime after #6, but I wouldn't reach for a QB 1st or 2nd round, there's far too much depth at that position.

The only reason I'd be picking up a QB in the first round (ie. Vick) is if a) I had a good backup QB in case of the inevitable injury and b) had every intention of trading Vick mid-season (assuming he's still healthy) to someone crazy enough to think he can maintain that level of play for an entire season. Despite how he did last year, Vick is not a video game.

If I pick 6th or later, I will look at a WR, but there's no QB worth a first round pick IMHO, this year or any year.
