Drafting advice for weird format...?

Postby JC.89 » Tue Aug 16, 2011 12:38 pm

The league I play in made a drastic change to the rules today. Instead of having one Flex and a TE, we now have two Flex's and a TE. That makes for ten starting players as opposed to nine.

QB
RB
RB
WR
WR
TE
FLEX
FLEX
K
DST

How should I approach things going into the draft? De-value the TE? QB?

What does flex consist of?
How many teams are in the league?

12 teams. Also a PPR league.

Flex positions can be any RB, WR, or TE.

With 3 flexes you are going to want to load up on wide receivers and running backs. Depending on the value present, I could see opening up the draft RB, RB, RB in standard scoring. Is this a PPR league? If so then I wouldn't go so running back heavy in the early rounds but 3 RBs and 3 WRs would be a decent starting corps. If this league is non-PPR, I'd push hard for a total of 4 running backs in your roster. You may not to be able to get 4 feature backs, but I could see 3 starting RBs and then a TD vulture like Brandon Jacobs, Willis McGahee, or Mike Tolbert, etc.

I can't necessarily say which position between QB or TE will be "devalued" exactly. A lot of that depends on how the draft is going. You need to focus on WRs and RBs, so whatever value presents itself outside of that will shape your draft plan. If a QB happens to fall in the 4th to 7th round range where he has great value, put the trigger. The same goes for TEs.

I'd look at the same as Mack - draft RB heavy and if there is better value at WR take them. You should look for the first 6-7 rounds to be RB or WR - getting at least 3 RBs. Target some later round QBs for the 8-10 spot. With 12 teams if you can get a very good RB core you should be able to do very well

There are very few if any formats(outside of 2QB leagues) that you need to draft a QB high

I've usually followed that same philosophy. The early QB I've ever taken was on a 5/6 snake, and that was three years ago.

But this year I'm very high on a couple guys.
