Feelings on Jon Beason -- WHIR...A lot!

So, I saw Beason hurt his foot, and I'm a little discouraged about his fantasy output last year. Sure he racks of the tackles, but in terms of big plays he was lacking and in my scoring system he barely cracked the top 25 in 2010 (tackles 1 pts, assists .5, sacks, ints, etc. 4 pts, everything else pretty standard).

Other LBs available that have caught my eye are James Harrison, Lance Briggs, and David Harris. (Our league has only one LB spot required.)

Let me know if you think I should consider replacing him with one of the above guys or am I just crazy.

This is kind of a tough call. Given health for Beason (no sure thing) I would foresee a return to the 140 tackle range. However, he's really never been a "big-play" guy. Looking at the four seasons of his career, he only has 4 sacks and 8 picks......total. He has no touchdowns and he doesn't cause or recover fumbles much either. What you're getting out of him is 120-140 tackles, 6-8 passes defenced and an occasional big play sprinkled in here and there. Using my league's scoring he ranked 19th last year among backers, averaging just a tick under seven and a quarter points per game. Pretty damn good and very consistent, but if you need big play potential, you may want to look elsewhere.

I would pick up Harrison, if he's actually available. He had 100 tackles last year, double-digit sacks plus a half dozen forced fumbles. In my league he scored about 21-22 more points than Beason. That could be the difference between making the playoffs or not making them. He's good....

Hope this helps.

I think a significant impact on Beason's output last year was temporarily moving him to OLB. The only issue there is that his best five games were the first five, when he was at OLB. Then he moved to MLB once Conner was injured and put up poor numbers.

Beason is a tough one. I'd take other potential studs like James Laurinaitis and Paul Posluszny over him, even old Ray-Ray.

I still like Beason a lot.
He has had a problem with his foot for over a year and once healthy should be better than ever. And on that team he should be on the field for 70% of every game.
Harrison is a lot older than last year (yeah yeah but he is playing like he is Several years older) and has looked slow and tired at least in preseason.
one difference between Harrison and Beason
Harrison will throw up a fantastic game with 22 points one week and 2 for the next three weeks but Beaon will evenly spread his 150 tackles and occasional big play over the entire season and that is a big advantage. except for the weeks when you play against 22 point Harrison.
i am actually hoping tha Beason sits this week just to make sure that foot is healed before he returns. they are projected to lose about 19 games this year so whats the rush?

I would take Harrison. Beason is a beast - but he needs to return to form to regain value that Harrison currently has IMO.

Beason also is going to have to share tackles with Thomas Davis and James Anderson. The Panthers are going to suck and have to play a lot of D, but there are some good tacklers back there and only so many tackles to go around. I like all 3 of those LB's - but I don't know which one if any has a monster year.

The Steelers manage to have 3-4 useful LB and Harrison is usually pretty disruptive. Those sacks to me equal chances at a fumble and a TD. He gets decent tackle #'s so he'd be one of the guys I'd want most with that scoring (slight point increase for INT/Sack).

I was thinking about this post just yesterday.
If only the stupid Panthers would have listened to me!

Guess that's one less thing for Carolina to worry about. Let's settle in and get on with ruining Cam Newton as fast as possible!
