12 teams-how many divisions?

Postby B3N1ZJAM1N » Sat Sep 03, 2011 10:30 am

I just started a league with my friends and we have 12 teams. My question is should I go with the ESPN standard 2 divisions of 6 or go with 3 divisions of 4?

Probably depends on a few factors including your playoff structure (weeks & # of teams).

If your playoffs are weeks 15-16 with 4 teams, 3 divisions works out well, you play your division teams 2x and other division teams once for a total of 14 games.

Hope that helps.

It would be your own preference. In both formats you would use a 13 game schedule with three weeks of playoffs (6 teams). I am in two 12 team leagues. one has 2 divisions of 6 teams and the other has 3 divisions of four teams. I think I prefer the two division format. With three divisions only six of your games are in your division. In the two divisions, ten division games would be played. I think that makes for a truer division champ.

This is what my 12-team league does, and it works well. We only have 4 playoff teams (top 3 division winners and 1 wildcard).

If the league is not a money league, 4 playoff teams out of 12 is not enough. After about five weeks over half the league is out of the running and the teams become inactive. If you have 6 playoff teams it keeps a lot more teams in the running and makes for a better league. If it is a money league then 4 out of 12 is about right.
