Better add: Torain or Maurice Morris? WHIR

Postby schmidty » Thu Oct 20, 2011 2:10 pm

This is a 12-team redraft, 0.5 PPR. Start QB, RB, RB, WR, WR, R/W, TE, K, DEF, D. With deep benches (8), 12 active managers, and weekly waivers (all players locked from Sunday to Wednesday morning) it's been a struggle to find quality guys from the FA pool. Unless you have the #1 waiver, you have to be psychic/lucky and get the top guys before they break out. I have (now a pretty decent) #5 waiver. Torain was just dropped in the last round of Wednesday morning moves. Morris is a free agent. Use #5 waiver on Torain? Pick up Morris? (he's a FA) Neither? My team:

QB: Brees, Flacco
RB: Foster, SJax, McGahee, Jacobs, Tate
WR: Nicks, Holmes, Branch, MThomas, Lance Moore
TE: Fred Davis, Cook
K: Kasay
DEF: Steelers
D: Willis, Bishop

Yeah, for this league I'm pretty well set at RB (as well as having a starting RB to play at flex) ... and this is even after I traded Best for Nicks. But more wouldn't hurt. Starting RBs are in great demand in this league. I have some easy guys to drop. Despite Willis and Bishop being IDP studs, with only needing to start one IDP you could argue that the position is as meaningless as a kicker. Both my TEs have had their byes. I'm probably riding with Davis (Cooley being out seems to raise his value a lot). And only needing to start 2 WRs, I could get by with 4 on my roster. LMoore is just impossible to ever start with confidence. Thomas has been a disappointment (more Gabbard's fault than his), and the signing of MSW may make whatever little value he has vanish.

Torain seemed no-brainer at first. But you never know with Shanahan and his RBs. Is he still the starter, and the Philly game can be chalked up to just an awful all-around offensive day? Game logs from last year remind you of his potential. Though my waiver number is starting to get good - worth going back to #12 over Torain?

MoMo is a lot more speculative. But he's free (for waiver number), and you have to speculate in this league. Has his own uncertainty. Injury news on Best is sketchy, though I think his multiple concussions could mean a lot of missed time. MoMo's old but doesn't have much wear on the tires. He's scored well (especially in PPR) when given the chance recently. Seems most likely to play the "Best role" in the offense.

Leave a link ... I'll help in return.

Post FA WR.
If you only need 1 IDP only keep 1.
Dump the extra IDP for Torain.
I'd also switch both your #3 and #4 WR with upside plays.
What is available especially at WR and TE?

Honestly, nothing that looks good to me.

TE? Ballard, Kendricks, Heath Miller. Though I suppose they have their supporters, I don't see either being an improvement over the guys I have. With Cooley gone, I'm holding onto Davis to see what he can do.

WR? Avant, Massaquoi, Benn, Gaffney, Damien Williams, Titus Young ... I guess Demaryius Thomas could be seen as a lotto-ticket kind of guy in Denver (though plenty of question marks with his long layoff, uncertain depth chart position, and QB who can't throw very well). I'm not particularly excited about any of them. Certainly not enough to dump Branch for - except for 1 bad game, Branch has produced every week. I need guys like that to cover me in a pinch.

There still seems to be a demand for RBs in this league though. The owner of Fitz, VJax, and Colston has made multiple postings on the league board practically crying out for RBs. So, thinking a bit down the line, I'm looking to pick up RBs who could provide value to my lineup. And if they pan out, move someone for a better WR.

BTW, I did drop Willis for MoMo ... at least for now. Seemed no harm in making the move, rather than risk having someone else scoop him up (only to hear Best is out for a long time when it's too late). So the question for now is ... a) stand pat (keep #5 waiver), b) use waiver to drop someone (MoMo, crappy WR, backup TE?) for Torain. While having Torain and MoMo might seem like too much, perhaps I can swing a RB for WR improvement.

I would definitely add Torain over Maurice Morris. Even though Jahvid Best has a history with concussions, everything I've read indicates that everyone on the team fully expects him to return sometime in the near future. That being said, it seems like Morris would only be a viable fantasy option for one or two weeks while Best is recovering. Torain, on the other hand, has a much higher ceiling and a much larger possible return. Even though I don't like Washington's RB situation, I think that the general consensus is that Torain will once again be the starting RB this week and he will get the majority of the carries in the following weeks as well so long as he continues to show that he is the most talented RB of the three.

Wow this is a tough one, i like Maurice better, hes averaged 4 yards and was a decent fill in last year, with Torain its a crapshoot i never feel comfortable unless one of the 3 get injured which Torain seems to do pretty consistently, at least with maurice you know you will get the touches..

Thanks for the help on mine, sorry it took me a while to get a response in, been traveling.

As for your question, I like adding MoMo better then Torain. Yeah Torain is in a more stable run environment in terms of number of carries each game, but who knows how long he'll be the lead back. At least in Detroit you know MoMo's going to be the main guy with Best on the shelf, for at least this week. You're backs are strong, I think I would have dropped Lance Moore first

I hope you added Morris and I'd go with the hot hand in Ballard.
