Concern w/ Playoffs and players being rested

Postby swtsae » Wed Nov 02, 2011 12:57 pm

I'm in a 10 team PPR league.

Roster is as follows:
QB: A.Rodgers, A. Dalton
RB: L.McCoy, F.Jackson, P.Hillis, C.Benson
WR: S.Smith (Car), G.Jennings, M.Manningham, D.Jackson, V.Cruz
TE: J.Finley, F.Davis
K: J.Hanson
DEF: GB

How concerned should I be that when/if GB clinches a playoff spot early that they start to rest their players, especially Rodgers. I'm currently 6-2 and in probably a pretty good position to make the playoffs but am concerned I might should make moves to prepare if Rodgers and Jennings get rested in weeks 15 and 16.

Thoughts?

It's a legit concern, but even the half a game of theirs is more than likely to be better than a whole game you could get out of someone on the wire.

Resting players weeks 15 and 16 is so incredibly rare I wouldn't worry about it.

There are 17 weeks in the NFL season (16 games and a bye).

IMO, there is no way Green Bay is going to decide to sit their guys for a month - week 15, 16, 17, 1st round bye, 2nd round of playoffs - it would be idiotic.

If you are that worried, you can, in all liklihood, get an absolute king's ransom for Rodgers/Jennings/Finley - if you're worried they may get rested, trade them. Personally, I'd keep them. Winning in the fantasy playoffs is 1/2 luck anyway.

15 is rare. 16, not so much. The Packers will most likely have it locked up pretty early, and with how often players have been getting injured this year, I believe that resting starters can be a very real concern for Packer players in fantasy.

Start rooting for the Niners and Lions. The more those teams win, the more pressure there will be on GB to keep winning too.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. Week 17 may be a real concern, but even if they do rest in week 16 it will only be for a small part of the game. They won't go weeks without playing.

TaDa, I can't recall teams significantly resting players starting in Week 16; I thought it was pretty rare. Do you have examples of how common it is?

Yea our play offs are week 15 and 16, so there is some hope that they dont start sitting players till week 17.

Blessing and a curse i guess. I,d like to try and trade for an Eli Manning level QB in case Rodgers gets "rested." i feel okay with Fred Davis over Finley but its gonna hurt if Jennings doesnt play either

16 is still rare, although there was a season recently where New Orleans and Indy had everything locked up so early in the season that they were both resting some starters in the second halves of games down the stretch, but as I recall, Brees and Manning were both still reasonably productive.

For a team to rest starters in week 16, they would have to have a 2 game lead on the next seed heading into the week and they would have to be a team interested in resting starters for 2 full weeks, which almost never happens.

I guess if your question is "should I be concerned?" My answer would be, no. If for no other reason than...what are you going to do about it? You're not going to trade any of them. I suppose you could scour the waiver wire or make a cheap trade for a below average player with a good 16 matchup...but that's two months away. Who is to say that matchup will be looking so good then?

So, since there isn't anything you can do about it, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Drafting Colts players was a danger every year for that purpose because their division was so bad, but it never affected their draft status. And only once out of all those years (I think) did they ever sit players Week 16.

Besides, if they did sit Jennings or Finley or even Rodgers Week 16 - James Jones, Tom Crabtree, and (backup QB whose name escapes me) might be pretty decent plays that week. (Not sure who they're playing...) All would likely be available on the waiver wire.

The Saints and Colts were the two teams that I specifically remember. Brees and Manning were still decent if I recall, but only played half a game each. Week 17 is not very rare at all and all fantasy leagues should be wrapped up by then.

no concern, they are going to have a perfect season!
but seriously, you have solid backups in WR/TE position, so in the VERY SLIGHT chance that they rest their players in week 16, all you lose significantly in its position is QB. With that said, there is no way I am going to trade away ARod just because of that slight concern.
